Her run from the Pacific to the Atlantic at the outbreak of hostilities was a highlight of the conflict. OREGON took part in the destruction of the Spanish Fleet at Santiago, Cuba, and is credited for actions against the Spanish vessels INFANTA MARIA TERESA VISCAYA ALMIRANTE OQUENDO PLUTON, and FUROR in that engagement. BACKGROUND: The USS OREGON was one of the new fleet of battleships promoted a special board created in 1890 to recommend the manner in which to update the U.S. Navy so that it could defend adequately against the imperial world powers, as well as by the nations of South America (several of which had larger vessels than any in the U.S. Navy). The board realized the need for battleships with a long-range cruising capability. However, many members of the United States Congress were in favor of Isolationism, and opposed long-range battleships as they were obviously not intended strictly for coastal defense. To assuage fears of the Isolationists, the new class of vessels were called "Sea-going coast-line Battleships". The name, an all-covering oxymoron, was thought to be particularly brilliant and useful by Theodore Roosevelt after he became Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy. BOSNIA U.S. ARMY BANDS IN HISTORY THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR AND THE PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION On February 15, 1898, an explosion sank the USS MAINE in Havana Harbor killing 266 of its crew. The American people wanted revenge. "Remember the Maine" became their slogan. They called upon the Army to fight a war far from its homeland. After several land actions and two naval victories, the War with Spain ended in just three months. Although the battles were minor, musicians again proved they were a still viable part of the Army during peace or war. Since almost every regiment maintained a band, bands and field musicians could be found at the front. While at the front at Santiago, Musician Herman Phisterer, Company H, 21st Infantry, earned the Medal of Honor for assisting in the rescue of wounded in front of the lines while under heavy fire. Musician Oscar N. Oden, Troop 1, 10th Colored Cavalry, recommended for the Medal of Honor, received a Certificate of Merit for his actions at San Juan. He continually exposed himself to heavy fire to obtain the exact range of the Spanish position. With the close of the Spanish-American War, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States. The Filipinos, feeling they had only exchanged one master for another, continued fighting for some years.

Bridgeport Harbor Lighthouse (1851) Bridgeport, CT The first lighthouse, built in 1851 on the west side of the harbor entrance, was a squarish structure mounted on 4 iron piles. At the top was an octagonal cupola, holding a sixth-order lens. The beacon was a fixed red light. The light was small and the structure was abused by waves, wind, and ice. Sometimes it went unlit because it was manned from shore. In 1870, due to increased traffic and the unreliability of the earlier light, funds were raised to build a new light to replace the older structure. The new light was located about 1 mile from land. It was built of wood and placed on screw-piles. The tower itself was placed at the front center of the house. The beacon was a more powerful, fourth-order lens, again displaying a fixed red light. In 1871, the lighthouse became operational. Due to its remoteness, access by the outside world was limited. During the winter of 1893, the harbor froze over and many visitors flocked to the lighthouse. The other noteworthy event involving the Bridgeport Harbor Light was the Spanish American war. The War Department decided to outfit the lighthouse with ten-inch guns in April 1898. Shipments of cement and rocks were delivered by schooner. These materials were used to build up the foundation of the lighthouse.

Karshner By Mary Karshner "Everything now looks as though Spain blew up the Maine . If she did—Lord pity her. Would I enlist? Well you needn't guess again." On 21 February 1898, less than a week after the USS Maine sank in the harbor at Havana, Cuba, Clyde F. Karshner wrote this observation in his diary. Three weeks later the nineteen-year-old from Big Rapids joined the Michigan National Guard. On April 26 Karshner and his unit, Company A, Fifth Regiment, left Big Rapids for Camp Eaton, where Michigan volunteers were training for the recently declared war with Spain. "It was hard to leave everyone"; but soon after arriving at the training camp near Brighton, he noted: "A week ago we were all good-for-nothing tin soldiers but today we are all nice fellows and good brave men." On May 23 the Michigan men, following an inspection and an oath of allegiance, were mustered into federal service as Company A, Thirty-fourth Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry. After a few weeks of additional training in Virginia, they headed to war. Clyde's company landed in Cuba on Friday, July 1. They marched all night and by the next day the Michiganians were a mile and a half from heavy fighting at Santiago. "We were marched around the hill where the fighting was taking place and placed under the brow of the hill while the bullets and shells whistled and screamed over us. After about two hours the Spanish got our location and then poured it into us without any return fire." On July 3 he noted: "Wounded and dead are being brought in constantly. The charge up the hill at the blockhouse day before yesterday by the colored regulars was the bravest charge since the charge of the light brigade. Boys are being picked off down by the creek by sharpshooters. We are getting a real taste of war."

Many New Mexicans would assert that after the Mexican American war their land holdings, guaranteed by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, were systematically stolen using legal and extra-legal means and as such would fit under the definition of imperialism no mater how democratic seeming the integration of NM into the republic seemed. Women Were There The Wars of 1812 and 1846 and the Spanish American War The War of 1812 The USS CONSTITUTION met and defeated HMS GUERRIERE, the first in a grand succession of victories in the War of 1812. It was during this ferocious battle that the seamen, astonished at the way the British cannonballs were bouncing off the Constitution's hull, cried out -"Her sides are made of iron!" Thus, her nickname,"Old Ironsides." What was not known at the time was the fact that a U.S. Marine, serving aboard Old Ironsides, as George Baker, was actually Lucy Brewer. Eventually the Marine Corps reluctantly acknowledged that Lucy Brewer was perhaps the very first woman marine. Here's the way the Historical Division of the USMC tells the Lucy Brewer story: It would be over one hundred years before the Marine Corps seriously began to recruit women - August 1918 - to be specific. Mexican American War - 1846 Sarah Borginis: Mrs. Borginis and a Mrs.Foley enlisted with their husbands into the 8th calvary at the Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Sarah became the principal cook at Fort Brown (Fort Texas) and stayed on the job when General Taylor moved most of his troops to the mouth of the Rio Grande. However, when the Mexicans began bombarding Fort Texas, (Fort Brown) from their positions at Matamoros, she was isssued a musket. It's said she took an active part in the ensuing fray, never missing a target or preparing a meal. Gen. Zachary Taylor breveted her to colonel, making her the first female colonel of the U.S.Army. She moved to El Paso and opened a hotel. For years it was a favorite stop of '49ers heading for the California gold fields. She later moved to Arizona and ran a Yuma saloon until her death in 1866. Col. Borginis was buried at Fort Yuma with full Military Honors - the first woman to be a ranking U.S.Army officer - albeit a brevet one.
