Reaching Out to Families Who Home School Children with Special Needs By Jane Gambill The number of families home schooling their special needs children is growing every year. Having been involved in the evolving ministry to these families in Illinois, since Illinois Christian Home Educators held its first special needs workshop at its annual convention in 1999, I have watched the number of attendees grow each year. Home School Legal Defense Association agrees the numbers are indeed growing. Several times I have shared my own story of how in desperation I asked for help and what a blessing that help has been. I encourage other mothers to also reach out to home school families in their support group and ask for help. Though they agree that their need is great, they tell me they can not ask others to make such a sacrifice. Realizing that it is too much for most people to ask of another, I have decided to ask for them. Thus I am writing this article to you the members of the home schooling community. I want to help you understand special needs families, their struggles and their needs. The things that I will share are from my own experiences as well as those of many mothers who have shared their stories with me. What the special needs child needs from your family Special needs children are very aware of what other children are doing, especially children that are their size physically. They want to be included, to be with the other children, to attempt to do what they are doing. Choosing to include them is a sacrifice that families and children must plan for and do purposefully as an action of love. It will interrupt their conversation with others, it will slow down their play and it will be an incredible ministry to both the child and his/her parents.

Inclusion has more to do with one's philosophy, approach, and willingness to learn than a "how to" check list. It is about seeing each child, no matter how challenged, as having the potential to learn and the same need to be loved and included as all other children. In the church, inclusion is also about wanting every child to know that they are deeply loved by God. Each child deserves the opportunity to worship and learn about God in whatever way he or she is able. With this foundation, a way can be found to include everyone even the most challenged children. Educate Yourself Learning about their specific needs is the next step to including children with special needs. Parents or other caregivers are the first and best source of information about the child and how to include him or her in church programs. Explain how worship time and church school programs function. Ask for help in identifying situations that limit the child's involvement and for suggestions in overcoming obstacles. Parents will usually have very helpful suggestions.
