Go to... Safety information Frequently Asked Questions Special needs These guidelines provide information about transport requirements to and from schools or special centres for children with Special Educational Needs. They are intended as a minimum specification to provide guidance for parents, teachers and transport operators. Specific individual requirements will be inserted into tender documents for the service into a school or centre where additional standards or requirements need to be met. At the end of these notes there is a form for completion and return to this office to ensure that all the special requirements for your child are considered when transport is arranged.
General points on assistance with transport Children with special educational needs may be assisted with transport but it is not an automatic right. An individual assessment is made of the child's needs and the individual circumstances. A copy of the policy approved by the LEA is available from the Education Department.

SPECIAL NEEDS We have a teacher appointed as the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, (SENCO), responsible for organising the provision of Special Needs throughout the school. Children with special educational needs are catered for, as far as possible, within the classroom environment. Those children identified as requiring additional help are given individual assistance by either a part-time Special Needs teacher or one of our senior teachers.
UNITS FOR CHILDREN WITH MODERATE LEARNING DIFFICULTIES We have two units which provide for children who have been identified as having moderate learning difficulties by the Special Education Department of the South Eastern Education and Library Board. The children in these units are enrolled as pupils of our school and are integrated into school life and into their year group classes, particularly in subject areas such as Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education. After intensive teaching programmes, these children should either be identified as being ready for reintegration into their own mainstream school or considered for some other special provision.
HOME SCHOOL LIAISON From time to time problems may arise concerning school work, relationships or family difficulties.

Disaster Preparedness for People With Disabilities (PDF) Establish a Personal Support Network
A personal support network is made up of individuals who will check with you in an emergency to ensure you are O.K. and to give assistance if needed. This network can consist of friends, roommates, family members, relatives, personal attendants, co-workers and neighbors. Some people rely on personal assistance services (attendants). This type of assistance may not be available after a major quake. Therefore it is vital that your personal support network consist of different people than those who are your personal attendants. If you employ a personal attendant or use the services of a home health agency or other type of in-home service, discuss with these people a plan for what you will do in case of an emergency. How will you get along in an emergency for as long as 7 days? A critical element to consider in your emergency planning is the establishment of a personal support network. Even if you do not use a personal attendant, it is important to consider having a personal support network to assist you in coping with an emergency. Do not depend on any one person.

Ask the Experts this week's question ...

I am trying to make an educated choice regarding my child’s education, but I'm a little confused. My daughter is two and a half years old and in a very good day care setting with stimulating programs. My sister-in-law put her infant daughter on a waiting list to ensure she got into private school. I don't want to assume that private school is necessary if the public schools in my area are good. So far, my criterion has been the percent of graduates who go on to college. Some of the local private schools boast 100% college acceptance, while my local public school is at 50%. There are other public schools that have 85% acceptance. Is this a good criterion to use? Should I let her start in public school and see how she excels?
