American Literature and Composition
Goals and Objectives: To read great American literature and to write in order to be prepared for academic success in higher institutions of learning; to recognize and discuss themes common in literature and life, thus providing a framework for serious discussions about our moral lives and consciences; to become keenly aware of male and female perspectives on many levels; and to become leaders in the classroom by contributing positively to a learning environment in discussions and in other activities.
Course Description: This course focuses on our American literary heritage and integrates composition, research, speech, collaborative projects, use of technology for writing and research, and other language skills with the study of literature. Since literary works reflect not only the ideas of individual writers, the instructor will consider literature as it relates to the larger cultural and historical context of the United States. Also, the instructor will expect a biographical knowledge of some of most important writers.
The fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry we read reflect the diversity of perspectives within our literary tradition, but the works also contain certain recurring themes which allow us to see upon what Americans

Goals and Objectives:
To read great American literature and to write (primarily in the expository mode) in order to be prepared for academic success in higher institutions of learning; to recognize and discuss themes common in literature and life, thus providing a framework for serious discussions about our moral lives and consciences; to become keenly aware of male and female perspectives in regard to life issues and to learn about the diversity of perspectives on many levels; and to become leaders in the classroom by contributing positively to a learning environment in discussions and in other required activities.
Also, the instructor will expect a biographical knowledge of some of our most important writers.
The fiction, non-fiction, drama, and poetry we read reflect the diversity of perspectives within our literary tradition, but the works also contain certain recurring themes which allow us to see upon what Americans characteristically or uniquely focus. Our readings will be organized according to four dominant themes:

Mrs. Dowling's Classroom Procedures
Home General Class Information Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures for using a telephone book, boarding an airplane, approaching a traffic light, and attending a wedding. The reason that we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient way other people do things. The following are procedures for this classroom. These procedures establish our classroom culture.
  • What do I do if I forget my pencil or paper?
First, you are unprepared. You must sign the STRIKE BOOK. If, however, you have a Dowling Dollar, you may purchase a pencil without getting a strike. This must be done BEFORE class officially starts..during Bell Work time.
  • What do I do when I come in the room?
  • Sharpen pencils (if you need to). You may NOT sharpen pencils during instruction time. Get your supplies out. All classes will start with a warm-up activity (Bell Work) each day. LA will have "Caught Yas" on Monday-Thursday. On Fridays, we collect the week's homework in your Base Group. Click here for Base Group Procedures
  • What do I do if I need to leave the room?
