Spotlight On Schools Featured Columnists Letters ... April 2001 New York City March 2002 Chris Witty: Gold Olympic Speed Skater “Whatever, man.” Chris Witty’s favorite saying, reflecting her legendarily laid-back attitude, served her well in winning the gold medal in the 1,000 meter speed-skating event at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics last month. Yes, in order to win her third Olympic medal—she has also won a silver and a bronze in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan—Witty had to overcome a lot. Mainly mononucleosis, a disease she did not even find out she had until a month before her big skate. “All I knew was I was tired all the time,” she said. “And so were my times in practice. I was actually relieved to find out something was really wrong with me. I was going to cry, but then I said to myself ‘that’s stupid. You just have to push your way through this like you’ve done with everything else.’” Witty has already proven she can push herself to miracles. Besides being the most decorated woman speed-skater in the U.S., the 31 year old from West Allis, Wisconsin has also competed in the Sydney Summer Olympics in cycling – finishing fifth in the 500-meter time trial – an almost unbelievable exacta.

Did You Know?

Who Organizes Figure Skating in the U.S.?

Who Oversees Figure Skating in the World?

30-Second Guide to Figure Skating Figure skating is one of the most popular of all Olympic sports, and it's also one of the few judged sports in winter Olympic competition today. The sport includes singles and pairs disciplines, as well as ice dancing. Singles and pairs figure skating feature jumps, lifts and many feats of strength and precision. Ice dancers cannot use of many of the most spectacular elements that other skaters can use, but instead concentrate on interpreting the rhythm and tempo of music through dance steps on the ice. Did You Know?
  • U.S. figure skaters have won more Olympic medals (40) than any other country in history. Additionally, the U.S. has won at least one medal in 14 consecutive Olympic Winter Games. Figure skating regularly draws some of the largest number of television viewers during its Olympic and other high profile events. Figure skating broadcasts from the 1994 Games in Lillehammer had the sixth highest rating in television history at that time. Synchronized skating, a non-Olympic discipline, is the fastest growing segment of figure skating. The first-ever World Synchronized Skating Championships was held in Minneapolis, Minn., in 2000.

For 13 years, members of the California Outdoor Rollerskating Association have been strapping on their skates in the Skate Against Violence Roadskate. This is a 450 mile skate-a-thon from Los Angeles to San Francisco. The roadskate is a rolling anti-violence publicity campaign designed to strongly raise awareness of the positive aspects inline skating can bring to the lives of youth and adults to give young people a fun, healthy alternative they can enjoy. This may not end hate or violence in the street, but it can have an enormous impact in the minds of young people who will benefit from the social interaction and the physical conditioning skating will bring into their lives. The skate-a-thon kicks off the Skate Against Violence Campaign.
This year we want to use our skate-a-thon to help boost San Francisco's image as the City prepares to be chosen as the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. We plan to work with Ann Cribbs and BASOC to help whip up an atmosphere of Olympic excitement by skating from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno, San Jose and end in San Francisco with an Olympic torch or Olympic flag from October 14 to 17. We also want to boost the image of inline and roller skating as we feel these sports should be included as Olympic sports.

Take a close look at the emblem of the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, to be held February 6 to 22 in Nagano, Japan. What do you see? A flower? A snowflake? The emblem's hexagonal shape mirrors the shape of a snowflake, an appropriate symbol for the Winter Games. The shape also resembles the flowering Alpine plant a purposeful symbol underlining the fact that Nagano emphasized environmental considerations in its staging of the Games. But a closer look reveals more! Take a look at the pictograph symbols designed to represent each of the Olympic sports that are part of the Nagano Games. Do you see a few of those symbols (and their shadows) cleverly "disguised" in the emblem? See if your students can pick out the sports represented in the emblem!
