Mr. Fortin used former hockey great Maurice Richard as an example of the competitive fire projected by the men and women who represent us in major international sporting competition that instills pride in all Canadians. "UPS Canada has been a sponsor of Speed Skating Canada since 1997. We feel that our association with the National Speed Skating Team and the Olympic movement go hand-in-hand," said Mr. Fortin. Those in attendance at today's event also had the opportunity to watch the national team's training session and witness the speed skaters' fierce determination to succeed as they prepare for the World Cup event in Montreal on October 21-23. "UPS is pleased to lend its support to athletes and coaches, helping them to achieve top honors in their fields of endeavor. The national team's results at the Olympic Games in Nagano engendered a tremendous feeling of pride and admiration within all Canadians," remarked Mr. Fortin.

For those who just can't seem to quench their need for speed, how about a few turns on the fastest ice on earth at Calgary's Olympic Oval, a world-class speed-skating and ice sports facility. Several world speed-skating records have melted at the Oval thanks to excellent ice conditions and Calgary's thin mountain air. The Oval, part of Calgary's 1988 XV Olympic Winter Games legacy, was the first covered speed-skating facility in North America and still rates among the world's best. Today, the Oval hosts a variety of world-class speed-skating competitions as well as recreational skating. It is not uncommon for a pleasure skater to rub blades or exercise alongside one of the world's many elite athletes who use the facility for training.

Weird Winter Sports
Racing headfirst on a sleigh at 90 miles per hour and skiing with a gun. These aren't things your crazy uncle does - they're Olympic sports. Here's a look at some of the weird winter sports you'll see at the 2002 Olympics. Skeleton
Skeleton is being held at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1948. This was the world's first sliding sport. Riders slide on a small metal sled with two runners. The sport was given its name in 1892 when the new metal sled was introduced and everyone thought it looked like a skeleton. Riders do risk being nothing but a pile of bones by the end of a run since they ride head first at speeds nearing 90 miles per hour. In 2002, women will compete in this sport for the first time. Biathlon
Biathlon combines two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Competitors are given points for how fast they ski and how accurate they can shoot. The sport originally started out as a survival strategy. People in Northern Europe would ski with guns to hunt for food and defend their countries. In the biathlon that takes place at the Winter Olympics, competitors just shoot at targets - not animals or each other. Short Track Speed Skating
Skaters race around a small oval track in fours over distances between 500 and 5,000 meters. The top two skaters

Rusty Smith, a 22-year-old on the National short track speed skating team that is based at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., is sharing a weekly diary during the World Cup season on his preparations for the Olympics. Last weekend, I went back to Los Angeles to work with my coach at home. But when I got home, I found out that I had a bunch of interviews that I had to do. Interviews are fun, but they are real time-consuming, so it cut down on a lot of the extra time that I had to spend with my coach. RUSTY SMITH Smith Age:
    Hometown:
    Sunset Beach, Calif.
    Sport: Short track speed skating
Accomplishments: In the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, he was 13th in the 1,000 and a member of the sixth-place relay team. At the 2000 Worlds, he placed fourth in the 1,000 meters, seventh in the 500 meters and eighth overall.
I had a five-hour interview with a local television station. They went surfing with me. They went to work with me at Home Depot. And of course, they were at the rink with me.

March 20, 2000 Is Inline Olympic-Worthy? USOC posts on-line poll asking which of five non-Olympic sports should be added to the Summer Games. The year is divisible by four, so besides adding an extra day to the calendar, it means that the Summer Olympics will be rolling along in the not too distant future. However, there will be no "rolling" except for cycling at Sydney 2000, but with your help, there might be come Athens 2004. Efforts have been underway for the past few years to get roller skating of some form into the most elite sporting event on planet Earth, and this week the United States Olympic Committee is featuring a poll on its website asking which of five sports not yet in the games should be added. (Just go to the USOC homepage and look for "Harris Olympic Poll" in the right-hand column.) Along with roller skating, the choices are bowling, racquetball, squash racquets, and water-skiing. This short list of possible additions to the Games is possibly indicative of good support for roller skating making its way into the Olympic Games, as news reports late last year indicated that about 15 international sport federations had petitioned the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for inclusion. However, there also appears to be strong sentiment that water-skiing be the sport that gets the nod. Inline and quad roller fans are thus encouraged to visit the USOC website and make their choice known. (Or as they say in Chicago, "Vote early. Vote often.")
