Spelling, grammar still a worry
Dominion 31 October1996 Agnes-Mary Brooke (Nelson) This opinion starts by quoting Marva Collins: " New methods and new theories are not the solution. In fact they have been the primary cause of mis-education. Teachers need to stop looking for excuses and teach. " The article then looks at the cost to industry and society of sub-standard literacy. They also look at the problems many students face in secondary school because they lack basic competence in reading, writing and comprehension. Biophysicist Harold Chugani of the University of California claims that trillions of connections between neurons are maintained in early childhood till the brain determines how many are needed. Those that are not are eliminated. That is, the more young children use their minds, the more brain cells they have and the more connections they keep. The second part of the article suggests that New Zealand's costly Reading recovery system is part of the problem. Based on a report from the British Office for Standards in Education, the author claims that whole language methods do not work, especially for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. ( Could it be that other parents at least partially compensate for the inherent defects in the system?

Skipping school
- is it OK to extend holidays?
Hutt News 19 January 1998 This article features the views of Gorham Millbank, Truancy manager at the Ministry of Education. I was particularly intrigued by the examples of unchallenged assumptions in his views. Not all is negative. For example, " Of course children benefit from alternative experiences outside the classroom ". However, the obvious implication is that the majority of "real" learning has to happen in a classroom. More positive is the claim that " It is very important for children to be supported by their families in their education. " Studies have shown that parental involvement makes more difference in a child's education than any other factor. Unfortunately he then puts us back in our place by saying " That means little things like being got up in good time every day, and sent off to school with the materials they need ..." Now I know he is writing about a particular situation - and hopefully did not even have home schoolers in mind. However, many parents have experienced this superior attitude from professionals - it is often in their mindset. They cannot imagine that parents can handle the important task of teaching their children - just the trivial ones of feeding, providing, etc. it is not a major leap from that position to social engineering - and even having children totally raised by professionals who, being properly trained, can do a better job than we amateurs. (The frightening thing is that the breakdown of the traditional extended family has so eroded parenting skills that too often there is an element of truth in this.)

Spelling, grammar taking a beating in world of e-mail Thursday, March 30, 2000 By MARTHA IRVINE
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS chicago if you've recieved an e-mail that loks like this ... you'r NOT alone !!!!!!!!! :) Experts say people who communicate via computer are becoming increasingly informal and sloppy. E-mail is routinely strewn with typos, grammatical errors and various shortcuts, such as no capital letters. The trend as relaxed as the Silicon Valley dress code really bugs some grammar purists. "A student wouldn't walk into a professor's office asking a question using bad English. Why would they send me that kind of mistake in an e-mail?" gripes Kenneth Brown, an assistant professor at the University of Iowa business school. An avid tracker of e-mail etiquette, Brown says he regularly chides students for sending sloppy e-mail to him and even to prospective employers. Some faculty members also have gotten a talking to.

A spelling / grammar Rant. This is about the attitude towards spelling/grammarthe average fanfic writer displays, and how they react to criticism of it.
    http://www.irrealistic.net/random/spelling.html
    A Spelling / Grammar Rant
You see, to me spelling and grammar is just as important as plot and characterisation in fanfic, and I think both should be approached in the same way.
    To illustrate: A quiz.
    Situation One
Somebody posts a comment on your story saying very politely that you make a lot of spelling and/or grammar errors but that otherwise the story is good. Do you:
  • Post a long rant in reply about how unfair it is to pick on your spelling and that good spellers need to realise that not everybody has got good spelling because the education system sucks and that people like them really take the fun out of fanfiction.
  • Burst into tears and swear off ever writing fanfiction again.
  • Roll your eyes, point all your friends to the message as an example of an anal-retentive freak, and then forget about it.
  • Figure it doesn't really matter - who cares about spelling and grammar anyway?
  • Read through your story, realise you made mistakes and fix them to the best of your ability, asking other people for help if necessary.
    Situation Two
Someone posts a reply to your story very politely pointing out that your characterisation is somewhat suspect and completely inconsistent, but that the plot had promise. Do you:

Note that this list is in no way intended to be comprehensive; it's just here to give you an idea of common errors people make when posting messages. Note too that we're not English professors! This is simply a common-sense guide. Do yourself a favor and check your spelling and grammar prior to posting your notes! Do you have to do this? No, of course not... only if you care what people think about you! After all, people in cyberspace know nothing about you but what they read in your notes. You do want to make a good impression, don't you?

    Browsing and Sluicing
    P. G. Wodehouse's reference to "excellent browsing and sluicing" suggests a diet not wholly in accord with ingredients approved by the Oxford Book of Health Foods , and quotations about food often indicate a degree of self-indulgence. A character in Thomas Love Peacock's 19th-century comic novel Crotchet Castle was sustained by "a well-buttered muffin, and the tonic of a small lobster", and a few years later the clerical wit Sydney Smith wrote to a friend that, "If there is a pure and elevated pleasure in this world it is a roast pheasant with bread sauce." Edna Ferber thought that, "Roast Beef, Medium, is not only a food.

    Some Spelling and Grammar Hints
One of the things which really irks a prof when he or she is marking papers (or exams) are recurring grammar and spelling errors which could have been corrected if the student had taken a little care when it came time to proofread. Unfortunately, these are also the sorts of things that students are often reluctant to seek help about. So here, in no particular order, are problems which every prof cringes at:
    When To Use Apostrophes
For some reason unknown to me, a great many students at universities really have no idea when to use an apostrophe. There are generally three uses for apostrophes:
    • They are used to show possession, for example: Caesar's horse, the temple's foundations, the dog's breath. If a word ends in an `s', generally an apostrophe without an `s' is added, for example: Gaius' chariot, the cactus' needles, the provinces' premiers. EXCEPTION: there is a class of words called possessive pronouns which never have an apostrophe, for example: his, hers, its, yours, theirs, whose (not who's).

Grammar and Spelling Grammar Fitness Grammar Fitness is easy-to-use software that helps students improve their grammar skills and provides teachers with measurable results. The program implements strategies which help students cope with many troublesome points of grammar including usage, diction, idioms, grammatical relationships, and punctuation. After an assessment, students advance through the program at their own pace. They are able to track their progress through their progress-to-date and session scores. Students' scores are kept in a management system that allows teachers to view and print reports. Designed for students in U.S. grades 6 through 10 (age 11 and up). The program can be used as well by advanced intermediate ESL and adult students. Our Review:
Grammar Fitness is a program for helping kids with their grammar (and a lot of adults could learn a thing or two as well). Learners are taken through a series of sentences and are given a choice between two possible errors or no error. Grammar Fitness can help to get rid of those annoying grammatical errors which children commonly use.
