    LESSON PLAN: Class Spelling Stories
    CURRICULUM AREA:
Language arts (also applicable to other subject areas where writing is, and can be, used to explore content)
    TEACHING LEVEL:
    Grades 6-8
    OVERVIEW OF MAIN IDEA:
Learning to spell words correctly enables students to write more correctly. In fact, the goal of all spelling instruction should be to enable students to spell and proofread words needed for purposeful writing. Until a spelling word is integrated into the writing process, it will not truly be "mastered." The words that students are most often called upon to write are the ones that they will remember and spell correctly. Therefore, frequent opportunities to use spelling words in writing will contribute significantly to the maintenance of students' spelling ability. Class spelling stories utilize words which are of highest frequency in students' writing.
    MATERIALS:
    List of "story starters"
    OBJECTIVES:
    Students are expected to...
  • Learn spelling in conjunction with writing.
  • Develop a spelling conscience that reminds writers of the reading audience.
  • Practice spelling words of highest frequency.
