Valder Learning Systems is devoted to giving students the gifts of dignity and self-sufficiency for the rest of their lives by helping them master the life long learning skills necessary for an independent, productive life. Using exclusive methods that teach basic skills in a way that is applicable in school and life, we not only give the children the tools necessary for learning, but show them how to use the tools properly for a lifetime of success. ILLITERACY COSTS A LOT MORE THAN EDUCATION How many organizations ask you for help for the needy throughout the year, especially during the holiday season? Like most people, you probably do what you can. Coats, food baskets and toys are given to needy families. Every year we help struggling families, and every year there seem to be more needy; and the children outgrow their coats; and they are hungry after the Christmas food basket is empty; and the toys are played with and left behind.

It's a tricky question because no single option is the easiest, most affordable, or efficient which is why some districts pick one approach, some another, and a few use several. And now, Utah's free-wheeling approach to reading education is about to be put to the test. In the last legislative session, lawmakers passed a requirement that 90% of 3rd graders must read on their grade level by 2006. http://www.sltrib.com/10232001/utah/142594.htm

http://www.manchestertwp.org/spelling.htm
Up Yes, We DO Teach Spelling! (February 1996) Do you remember when "spelling" meant getting your list of words on Monday, copying them, using them in sentences, then taking a test on Friday? It was a subject that occupied a small portion of our school week. We memorized our spelling lists, took the test on Friday, and promptly forgot the words by the following week. Educational research has found that, for most students, this is exactly what happened. Memorizing spelling words for a test is not the same as actually learning and understanding the words. For this reason, spelling in the nineties has evolved into an integrated approach to the study of words, looking at both their spelling and their meaning. This 'word study' takes place throughout the school day and across the curriculum. At a workshop for parents at Manchester Township Elementary School, instructors Kathy Froriep and Judy Hughes discussed spelling strategies for elementary students. They explained that changes in teaching methods at the school have left some parents with the misconception that they don't teach spelling. In reality, they say, spelling is a subject that receives a great deal of attention in the classroom, as well as at faculty meetings and workshops. Within the last four years, a new language arts program in the district has placed a heavy focus on student writing. "Our children are writing better than they ever have," said (former) Principal Barbara Juliano. They are also writing more. They write in journals. They write about what they are reading. They write in science, social studies, even in math. They start writing in kindergarten. By the second and third grades, students are bringing home impressive quarterly writing portfolios.

    33. How To Teach Any Child To Spell
Then you teach the rule that applies to that particular spelling problem. Itis primarily a guide for the teacher to show how to teach spelling.
    http://www.kingsharvest.com/catalog/teachanychildtospell.html
How to Teach Any Child to Spell
    and
    Tricks of the Trade
This is a concise, simple and practical approach to Spelling that takes the "fear factor" out of building spelling lists from your students' writing. I have always agreed that this is the very best approach and the one that makes the most sense to your children, since they are spelling words that have a purpose in their livesthe words they use everyday. Plus, as new vocabulary creeps into their lessons, so too does the opportunity to learn to spell more advanced words. The beauty of the system, as in Natural Speller , is that you add a word to your student’s spelling journal only after it has been misspelled in a daily lesson. Then you teach the rule that applies to that particular spelling problem. You spend the week or just a few days studying words that fit that rule, so your kids have the opportunity to internalize the rule, instead of just memorizing the word. Then the next time your child encounters a word that uses that same rule, they will likely be able to spell it without intervention from you. Don’t get me wrong, I, nor these books advocate memorizing spelling rules for the sake of memorizing rules. Use the writing coming out of your students' school work and teach the rules that apply to their misspelled words. You'll avoid the "Why do I need to know this?" syndrome, because they can see that it is coming directly from their own work. The rules are not just something to memorize, they are something that can be used.

About Laurie's Stories Laurie Story Vela, M.A. began creating Laurie's Stories in 1989 and since then has been touring the nation's schools and libraries with the BookTelling shows. Laurie Story Books, Tapes and the Leaping Literacy Program are available for home, school, and library use. Based on the FUNdamentals of literacy, the all original stories, rhymes, songs and characters forge the way with an unusual voice for edutainment. For the background story and more details, read The Laurie Story.
    Laurie's Stories' Mission Statement
To put the FUN in the fundamentals of Literacy and English Language Development through interactive, imaginative materials that feature original, child-centered stories, rhymes, songs and characters. What's Different About Laurie's Stories?
The content is what's different about Laurie's Stories; the way the basics of language and reading are turned into FUNdamentals. Word play is rooted in literature, fun reading experiences rich in text and picture. The pictures and the voice of the stories are from a kid's point of view. Rhyme and alliteration are what kids refer to as "tongue twisters" or "Mother Goose Rap". Laurie's Stories are designed to build reading and spelling fluency, providing bridges between emergent reader and chapter books. The other thing that is different about Laurie's Stories is the Mother Goose Rapper herself, Laurie Story.

    http://teacher.scholastic.com/lessonrepro/lessonplans/instructor/spell1.htm
    Spelling Strategies:
Learning High-Frequency Words By Diane Snowball The 100 most frequently used words make up about half of the written English language. Here are strategies I use to help students learn to spell these words.
    Strategy 1: Chart the Words
To underscore the idea of high-frequency words, I have students keep a list of the words they encounter most often in their own reading and writing. I later supply them with a chart like our 100 Most Common High-Frequency Words . (Students can keep this chart of high-frequency words in their writing folder or notebook and check off each word as they learn it. In the younger grades, display this list on your word wall at eye level.) I like older students to check early in the year if they know how to spell all high-frequency words. If not, they need to set personal goals to learn them. With younger students, we make learning high-frequency words an early priority, along with trying unknown words.
    Strategy 2: Break Bad Habits
It's very difficult for students to break the habit of a misspelling if they do it for a few weeks. I carefully observe students' writing, and if I see they are consistently misspelling the same high-frequency word, I say, "I notice you are using that word often in your writing, so let's find out and learn the correct spelling."

    Spelling Strategies:
Mastering New Words for Writing By Diane Snowball A seven-year-old recently told me that instead of the whole class learning the same spelling words, students would be better off learning the words they wanted to use for their own writing. Smart kid! So how do we help children select and learn relevant words?
    Strategy 1: Proofreading
As soon as children are spelling some words conventionally, encourage them to proofread: Underline words they think are wrong, and then try to get them right. A Try-It-Out sheet (with columns for First Try, Second Try, Third Try, and Correct Spelling) can help. Children try each word two or three ways and then use a resource to check the spellings. This is also useful for charting spelling growth.
    Strategy 2: Choosing Words
    Strategy 3: Learning Words
Talk about useful ways to learn how to spell words, such as:

    Why Johnny Can't...
    Don't Teach Spelling
    1997 September 24
    Wednesday
Spelling was one of those things that I didn't learn in school. It's almost as if I knew there would be a much easier way to learn to spell if I just waited a while. What happened, of course, is that about the time I turned 35, I got a computer with a spelling checker. I quickly discovered all those words I had been misspelling for decades. In about a month I had learned to spell. Spelling is a singularly useless chore. In some languages it doesn't exist at all. If you know how to say a word, you know how to spell it. English is certainly a rich language, but that richness has its price. The richness came from all the various languages that went into making English, and unfortunately each one left a scar on English spelling. But now the question: Why teach spelling if kids will learn it as soon as they are provided with computers that show them each misspelled word and explain what the possible correct words are (along with the meaning of each)? Spelling is the kind of learning that kids hate and that drains their enthusiasm for school. Just give it up. They'll learn to spell anyway. E-mail jhcrawford.com
