The Principles of a Balanced Reading Program For over 30 years Action Reading has been a most successful learn to read program. Now, after 30 years of studies, two very expensive Federally funded programs affirm Action Reading teaches the recommended reading principles and Action Reading teaches the principles in the prescribed order. The research findings distilled from studies under the $1 Billion "Project Follow Through Study" and the $200 Million in studies conducted under the direction of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development indicate that, to be effective, these principles should be taught in the order in which they are presented below: Principles of a Balanced Reading Program
  • Teach phonemic awareness directly in kindergarten.
    • Students should be taught that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of elementary speech sounds. These skills do not develop naturally and must be taught directly and systematically.
  • Teach each sound-spelling correspondence explicitly.
    • Students should be explicitly taught the single sound of each letter or letter combination. Each day, there should be five or ten minutes of practicing the sounds of letters in isolation. The balance of the lesson should provide practice in recognizing these letter/sound relationships in decodable text.
  • 62. Action Reading
First, directly teach phonemic awareness. teach each soundspelling correspondenceexplicitly. teach students sound spelling, decodable text.

Action Reading Classroom Kit Information The ACTION READING school classroom program is the first to demonstrate that reading is a skill which can be taught in one year or less. It is the forerunner program that reintroduced systematic phonics teaching to reading instruction. "Anyone can learn to read-anyone."
Dr. George O. Cureton, Originator of the ACTION READING method. ACTION READING provides the reading results educational systems need in order to meet the new mandatory reading skills now required by many states. ACTION READING classroom teaching programs are used in public, private and charter schools across the country with overwhelming results. They have also been utilized to achieve phenomenal successes in At Risk Youth programs and to teach the skill of reading to students labeled with learning disabilities such as Dyslexia, ADD, LD and slow learners.

    http://www.oqe.org/15.html
How Can Spelling and Grammar be Improved? Teachers need to be encouraged to use rigorous and more effective strategies for teaching spelling and grammar. Why? At present, the Ministry of Education, most faculties of education and most school boards encourage teachers to use the 'process writing' approach to teaching spelling and grammar. Using this method, the teacher encourages the students to express their creativity by writing freely, without worrying about correct spelling or grammar. "Conventional" (as opposed to 'inventive') spelling is gradually introduced in the context of the students' writing. Formal lessons in spelling are rare; in grammar, they are virtually non-existent. Some children are easy to teach; they learn no matter what the teacher does. The majority of children learn with moderately good teaching. And some children are really hard to teach; they learn only if they are taught very, very carefully. The first two groups will respond well to a mixture of process writing and formal spelling and grammar lessons. The hard-to-teach students will need a lot of extra drill and practice. Most Ontario teachers would find it difficult to provide their students with the necessary teaching, for the following reasons.

    Isn't "invented spelling" important?

    Don't we teach phonics now?
Most schools use a form of phonics called "implicit phonics." Words are first learned as a whole, then broken down as needed. For example, colors are frequently learned by word in kindergarten. If help is needed, beginning and ending letter sounds are given, but students must guess to fill in the middle of the word using sentence context clues. This can help students become better guessers when reading, but is this really the best way to determine the meaning of a word? Look at the words "lobotomy" and "laparoscopy." They each have the same shape, beginning and ending letters, and same general meaning in context (both being surgical procedures). Few of us would wish for a surgeon who could only read these words in this way! Do mistakes like this really happen? In Virginia a teacher was recently hired to tutor a licensed pharmacist who could not discern the difference between "chlorpropamide," which lowers blood pressure, and "chlorpromazine," which is an antipsychotic. "Mistakes like this happen all too frequently. But as Mark Twain once wrote, 'The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug!"

From Other Guides Spelling Resources for Homeschooling Spelling Tests for English - Classic Literature Spelling Links Spelling words in English is challenging work. As a matter of fact, many native speakers of English have problems with spelling correctly. One of the main reasons for this is that many, many English words are NOT spelled as they are spoken. This difference between pronunciation and spelling causes a lot of confusion. The combination "ough" provides an excellent example: Tough - pronounced - tuf (the 'u' sounding as in 'cup') Through - pronounced - throo Dough - pronounced - doe (long 'o') Bought - pronounced - bawt It's enough to make anyone crazy!!

    http://home.vicnet.net.au/~ozideas/whispanref.htm
Spelling and Literacy in Cuba and Nicaragua The Hispanic spelling system used in Cuba was simple enough before Castro's revolution, but in 1953 with more than half the children unschooled, literacy rates were around 42% in urban areas and 23.6% overall. Castro's guerrilla manifesto of 1957 included an immediate literacy campaign, with the watchword 'Revolution and education are the same thing The 1961 National Literacy Campaign reportedly reduced the level of illiteracy to 3.9%, but without their simple orthography, it might have had much less success. The straightforward spelling made it possible to use Paulo Freire's conscientisation techniques of teaching reading and writing with high-school students as teachers. However, with English spelling as it is, a similar teaching method could not be used to teach literacy in English-speaking schools - as a simple experiment would show. Lessons began with thirty key politicising words containing all letters and speech sounds, broken down into syllables from which new words and sentences can be created. To introduce the vowels and consonants, the fifteen Hispanic phrases first taught were Organisation of American States (from which Cuba had just been expelled) National institute of agrarian reform, the co-operative farm, the land, Cuban fishermen, the people's store, every Cuban a home owner, healthy people in a free Cuba, national institute of tourism, the militia, the revolution that wins all the battles, the people at work, Cuba is not alone, the year of education, poetry and the alphabet.

Principles of Reading Instruction Based on the Findings of Scientific Research on Reading
These principles have been distilled from the findings of more than 30 years of research studies under two very expensive federally funded programs: the $200 million in studies conducted under the direction of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the $1 billion Project Follow Through Study. The research indicates that, to be most effective, these principles should be taught in sequence:
  • Teach phonemic awareness directly in kindergarten. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of elementary speech sounds.
  • Teach, explicitly and in isolation, the single speech sound-spelling represented by each letter or letter combination. Provide practice in recognizing these speech sound-spelling relationships in decodable text.
  • Teach frequent, highly regular speech sound-spelling relationships systematically progressing from easier to more difficult, and provide practice reading them daily, first in isolation and then in the context of words and sentences.
  • Teach students directly how to sound out words by blending the words' speech sound-spellings together sequentially from left to right, and then provide practice using words composed of only those speech sound-spelling relationships that have been systematically taught.

Facts on the teaching of spelling Too much that is known about how to teach spelling isn't being put into practice. I can think of no subject we teach more poorly or harbor more myths about than spelling.Richard Gentry, 1987 Background For decades, more people seem to have considered themselves poor spellers than good spellers, despite the fact that most of us spell correctly the vast majority of the words we write. With spelling, we seem to expect that all of us should spell one hundred percent correctly, even on first drafts, and even as young children. Perhaps it is this unrealistic expectation that leads some parents and others to object when teachers use newer methods of helping children learn to spell, such as encouraging children to "use invented spelling" in their early attempts to write. Such critics mistakenly assume that children who initially use approximate spellings will never become good spellers, or that if the time-honored method of memorizing spelling lists were used instead, every child would become a perfect speller. Neither observed experience nor research supports these assumptions.
