COLLEGES WEIGH WHETHER TO PLAY
UNLV officials balance normalcy with athletes' safety By MARK ANDERSON
REVIEW-JOURNAL
T he jobs of Jerry Koloskie and other UNLV administrators quickly changed Sept. 11. Making their situations more difficult was the lack of direction from the NCAA. So Koloskie and the other UNLV officials did what they could in deciding whether to proceed with the games or change the various schedules. "We tried to maintain as much normalcy as we could and make the safety of our student-athletes our utmost priority," said Koloskie, the Rebels' senior associate athletic director. "We tried to follow the direction given us by the United States, if you will, and the decision by the NCAA and the conference." President Bush told Americans to go on with daily life, but that was difficult for UNLV's athletic teams because of the temporary shutdown of the nation's airports. To put a team on a plane or wait for an opponent to make the trip was not reasonable.

Colleges: Texas Tech Tech's secondary needs are filled By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News The seven defensive backs the Red Raiders signed Wednesday out of a class of 23 all come with solid credentials. Tech coach Mike Leach said some immediate starters could emerge from the group, but he felt confident that all could help bolster the Red Raiders' weakest unit. "I think they're all great candidates," Leach said. "You never know what the adjustment process is in going to Division I-A. Arizona Western's Jabari Smith, Shreveport Evangel Christian's Chad Johnson and Sunset's Chris Parker also have impressive resumes. Somebody will have to step up.
