http://www.farmallpromenade.com/
Nemaha Farmall Promenade In January of 1998, when the idea of the Farmall Promenade tm was conceived, few people could have envisioned what was to follow! Twelve residents of the “Mighty Small Town” of Nemaha, Iowa (pop. 120) were only trying to draw people to their upcoming centennial. What they created was a performance that has delighted hundreds of thousands of people across this country and around the world. Square dancing itself is nearly a lost art and square dancing on tractors is something you must see to believe. Nemaha’s gentlemen and their “lovely ladies” do their dances with eight antique tractors. The show is complete with the patter of a square dance caller who directs them to swing their partners, promenade their ladies fair, grand right and left, and do-si-do. You will be held spellbound throughout the entire performance! Download a video clip of the Farmall Promenade: Windows Media Player Real Player QuickTime Right click on the format you wish to download and select save as. After saving the movie to your disk, you will be able to open and view it. For more information regarding the Farmall Promenade, or to have them come perform near you, please contact:

C alling a square dance is tricky, especially if the dancers are bears. I f you desire, you could just watch these bears dance to your instructions. Try clicking on the Dance box and then clicking on several of the floor tiles. I f you want a challenge, try to get the bears to complete a dance by moving the lady bears to the pink squares and the gentlemen bears to the blue squares.
B egin by selecting a dance from the list. Click on the pink and blue squares on the dance floor to make the dancers change their positions. Diagonal squares will cause a corner foursome to rotate. Edge squares will cause an octet to revolve about a center square. Yellow arrows will appear to indicate the direction each dancer will move.
Y ou may click on future moves while the dancers are still moving. If you make a mistake on a future move, click the Stop button to halt the dancers.

    51. What Is Square Dancing?
(Updated 4/00) WHAT IS square dancing? First off, square dancing is probablyNOT what you think it is. square dancing IS a lot of fun.
    http://saturn.vcu.edu/~jmatro/square.html
(Updated 4/00) WHAT IS SQUARE DANCING? First off, square dancing is probably NOT what you think it is. It's usually presented in movies, schools, etc., as a fairly "simple" activity (you know do-si-do, promenade, swing your partner, etc.). Nothing could be farther from the truth, as you'll see below. Square dancing IS a lot of fun. Once you start, you'll probably find that you're hooked. It's also a great way to get exercise. For some health info, click HERE A typical dance evening consists of several dance "tips," lasting about 10 minutes each, with breaks in between. At the beginning of a tip, the dancers line up to form "squares." A square has four couples, with one couple making each side of the square. There may be many squares on the floor, but each is separate. That is, each square of four couples works together as a team, independently of the others. A "caller" stands at one end of the hall and begins giving a sequence of instructions for the dancers to follow. Each of these instructions, or "calls," requires that some or all of the dancers in the square perform a pre-determined manuever. The caller doesn't literally tell you where to move, he/she just gives the name of the call, such as "linear cycle" or "ends fold," and the dancers respond. Some of the manuevers are simple, others are more complex. Although they begin in a square, after each manuever the formation of the dancers will change, maybe to waves, or columns, or diamonds, etc., or the dancers' positions within the formation will change. There are lots of variations.

    by Paul Tyler
(This article was originally posted to the Usenet newsgroup Okay, I've been asked to put-up or shut-up, and though I really should be packing, I'll give it a try. A good dancer has complete awareness of how it all fits together: the music, the calls, the figures, his/her partner, neighbor, corner, opposites, etc., the whole set, the whole floor, and, maybe most importantly, his/her own body and all its parts. There are lots of things that the good dancer does that are seemingly unknown or totally unimaginable to many twirl and barf dancers.
  • only once around. (As you can quess, this happened to me the other night. The beginners did fine, the experienced contra dancers didn't listen. They must have felt they had a right to swing as long as they wanted.)
  • Good dancers embellish appropriately. I'll bet many people who think of themselves as good dancers couldn't get through a dance without all the extra twirls. They don't know what the basic
  • Good dancers know where a figure is going so they can direct their momentum to the flow of the dance. This is a much bigger challenge in squares. Who/where do you face when you end a swing? Or a do-si-do? How do you break a circle to lead on to the next? Or to form a line? The challenge of flow in contras is more controlled , but there are subtle shifts of flow where the dancers have to direct their own energy. Not every gypsy or do-si-do or star or circle is the same.

Now that we are on the road, we know we should change the title of our page, but it is already in search engines this way, so I am reticent to do so. We're happy our Web Page reaches so many old and new friends. Be sure to check Mike Sikorsky's page , as I do that for him, too. Dancing in 2003
  • Mesa, Arizona - January - March 2003
  • We are enjoying our fourth visit to the square dancing mecca of Mesa. Although we attend some A2 dances, we have confined most of our floor time to C1 workshops and dances because we have embarked on the adventure of C2 lessons. We feel we should be able to do C1 in our sleep in order to justify taking C2 lessons. We are once again enjoying workshops and dances given by Randy Dougherty, Bill Haynes, John Steckman and Mike Sikorsky. And the dancers are greatold friends and new friendsall enjoyable to be with.
