St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, the only definite statement to be made about his birthplace is that it was not in Ireland. He is said to have been born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, Scotland; in a village close to Glastonbury, England; in Monmouthshire, England; in Tours, France; and in Wales. In his Confession , he tells us he was born at Bannavem Taberniae, but just where that was we do not know. He was, as far as anyone has been able to determine, a Britannic Celt, raised a Roman Catholic.
The year of his birth is equally confused; A.D. 373, 386, 387, 389, 395, and sometime early in the fifth century have all been advanced as possible birth dates. He seems to have died in either 461 or about 492. One Irish legend states that he died at the age of one hundred twenty, as Moses did. Some scholars believe that there must have been at least two St. Patricks whose deeds have been ascribed to one man. According to them, this would also account for the long life span. The Irish scholar James Carney discounts this theory, holding that St. Patrick arrived in Ireland in 461 and not in the widely accepted 432. He says that " the Patrick of 432-461 is. . . merely a chronological phantom.

DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION
Twin Cities Police Authority TEACHING KIDS TO RESIST DRUGS AND VIOLENCE
The Twin Cities Police Department is committed to its D.A.R.E. Program where Officers teach in local schools. The following officers at Twin Cities Police Authority teach DARE to the 5th and 6th graders, along with doing visitations on safety issues to the younger kids:
  • Officer Chuck Luvenguth
  • Officer Patrick Torres
  • Juvenile Detective Patty Monge
  • Officer Mike Morarity
  • Officer Matt Mitchell
The 17 lesson DARE curriculum is currently taught in the following schools:
  • St. Patricks, Larkspur
  • Hall Middle School, Larkspur
  • Neil Cummins, Corte Madera
The focus of DARE is not only to talk about specific "gateway" drugs and their effects, but to deal with issues that surround drug use. Issues such as self-esteem, consequences, peer pressure, alternatives, risks, violence and gangs. The lessons are taught by a sworn police officer and are supplemented by videos and role playing by the kids. We are hoping to add Marin Primary and Middle School to join the D.A.R.E. program in the new school year. We are also going to send officers to D.A.R.E. Middle School Training, so the D.A.R.E. message can be reinforced to the older students. D.A.R.E. WILL REACH 35 MILLION CHILDREN

My Teaching Philosophy
Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can eat for a lifetime. I truly believe that all members of the classroom community deserve the opportunity to learn and grow. Students must be presented appropriate challenges to stimulate their desire to learn. With continual feedback from the classroom community, and adaptation of the short and long term goals, I would hope that all students' needs can be addressed and met.
Below is what happens when art meets chemistry head on!!!!!! These are a few of my favorites from the Stoichiometry Art Project Assignment which students seemed to enjoy very much. Above, a nice 3-D Dog and House and a representation of nugget day

Pupils Transferring to this School
Mr. J. Shorten has responsibility for facilitating the smooth transfer of pupils to the Senior School from the Junior School. Pre-transfer liaison takes place between the teachers of third class and their colleagues who teach second class and there is a transfer of relevant information on each pupil. The pupils from second class also spend part of a day in their new classroom in the Senior School in order to familiarise themselves with their surroundings and meet their third class teacher. A meeting is also held for parents of second class pupils during the month of June each year in order to allay any fears they might have about the transfer.
Pupils Moving on to Secondary School
Mrs. C. Murray has responsibility for facilitating the smooth transfer of pupils in sixth class to Skerries Community College and other second level schools. Because of the importance of the transfer, there is regular liaison between Skerries Community College and our teachers in the sixth classes. Post-transfer liaison also takes place in order to ascertain how former pupils are adjusting to the inevitable change which the transfer to second level education brings.
