NO CROWDS
Your small dive boat will likely be the only one around the island.

Like a necklace of gemstones , St. Vincent and the Grenadines' 32 islands stretch along the southern end of the Caribbean's Windward Islands for 45 miles. From St. Vincent's volcanic cliffs dripping with emerald green vegetation fringed by black sand to Petit St. Vincent's perfect white sand and aquamarine waters , divers find unspoiled reefs and an incredible diversity of marine life. View SVG location on the globe. Locate SVG on a Caribbean Map The major areas for diving are scattered throughout the island chain. Bequia, Canouan, Mustique, St. Vincent, and the area around Mayreau, Tobago Cays, Palm and Union Islands are serviced by local dive operators. The diving in St. Vincent is the best in the Caribbean if you love underwater macro photography, seahorses, frogfish and exotic creatures. You won't find the quality or quantity of unique creatures in Dominica, Grenada, Saba, Bonaire, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, Barbados or any other Caribbean Island. Here the diving compares only with the Indo-Pacific countries of Indonesia, Philippines and PNG. Read Roger Steene 's comments on diving St Vincent located on the St. Vincent pages of this site.

A small Grenadine island such as Bequia would get short shrift, if it got any mention at all, but Philpott not only includes it, he tells when the ferries sail and how much they cost. Philpott describes the Windward Islands so well, it's tempting to extend the vacation and check out a few more islands while you're there."

The islands are geographically divided into "inner" and "outer" chains. The inner islands are volcanic in origin, and are characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall and lush vegetation. The high points of these islands are generally in the center, except for a few spectacular sheer slopes on some coastlines. High points of elevation vary from 1,000 to 5,000 feet. The outer islands have a coral limestone base and are relatively flat and less rainy than the inner islands.
Dominica is the largest and most northerly of the Windward islands. It lies between Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Its terrain is rugged and mountainous with considerable annual rainfall and extensive rainforest.
St. Lucia is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide. It lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is situated to the south of Martinique and the north of St. Vincent. It is a volcanic and mountainous island whose highest peak is Morne Gimie (3,145ft).
Antigua's 108 square miles (280 sq. km) are mainly coral based and low lying, but the south is particularly fertile, with undulating hills of volcanic origin. The highest point (1,319 feet, 405 m) is at Boggy Peak. The coastline is deeply indented and provides many natural harbors.
