Saint Vincent History Page
This is one of a number of web pages that are related to the caribbean island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; its region, people, geography and other topics of potential interest to potential visitors. This page is concerned with the early history and its present implications.
Why is history important?
There were two things that I noticed in St. Vincent that surprised me. One was the relative lack of racism. This doesn't mean that there isn't a kind of snobism that ranks a lighter skin superior to a darker skin, but there isn't the blanket hostility by people of color toward the euroamerican minority that there is on some of the other islands. I attributed that in part to the lack of an overpowering tourist industry with its requirement of servility and consequent resentment. But beyond that, the variety of color shades in the complexion was comparable to French rather than former British islands. That meant that there had been friendlier relations in the past as well as the present. The other thing that surprised me was the placement of guns in Fort Charlotte. In most fortresses that overlook harbours, the guns point out to sea to aim at approaching ships. On St. Vincent the guns pointed inland to what was probably jungle or plantation when they were installed. Fort Charlotte was designed to defend against the islanders.

The exercise sought to reinforce the U.S. participants' abilities to carry out the following "mission essential tasks":

Eastern Caribbean Dive Operators
With the exception of places like the Maldives and the Seychelles, the islands of the Eastern Caribbean seem like some of the hardest dive destinations to get to from American cities. The travel experts here at RSD have just made the world a little smaller. With this exclusive guide to planning and executing your Eastern Caribbean dive vacation, the effort it now takes to get to the Lesser Antilles will be lesser than you ever imagined.

Diving at a glance
Like a charm dangling from a bracelet, Barbados lies in the Atlantic Ocean 100 miles east of the Windward archipelago. But the diving here is pure Caribbean, with fringing and banking reefs encircling the entire island. Diving is concentrated on the leeward west and south coasts, where hard corals grow thick along the crest of the reef, and orange elephant ear, convoluted barrel sponge and rope sponge cascade down the drop-off of the outer reef. A full range of Caribbean tropicals populate Bajan waters, along with an unusually high concentration of hawksbill turtles. The island's best-known and most spectacular dive site is the wreck of the 365-foot Greek freighter Stavronikita , home to barracuda, moray eels and a vibrant coat of bright yellow tube sponge, delicate pink rope sponge and crimson encrusting sponge.

Which Island for You?
Geography in Brief The Caribbean Sea, an area of more than a million square miles, stretches south of Florida down to the coast of Venezuela. The Greater Antilles - the islands closest to the United States - are composed of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and Puerto Rico. The Cayman Islands lie south of Cuba, and the Turks and Caicos Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean north of Hispaniola. Though technically part of the Bahamas, they are often considered part of the Caribbean, because of their proximity to and affinity with the other islands. The Lesser Antilles A Sampling of Island Culture The Caribbean population is a rich gumbo of nationalities, including Americans and Canadians who have retired to and invested in the islands. Little remains of the indigenous populations (there are Carib communities on Dominica and St. Vincent, as well as tantalizing, if sparse, archaeologicalremains), and many other groups have left their cultural imprint on the Caribbean. Nowhere is African culture more noticeable than in island music. Calypso was born in Trinidad, and its catchy rhythms veil the barbed working-class satire of many of the lyrics. The island is also the stomping ground of a flat-out, freewheeling Carnival that rivals the pre-Lenten celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

The DR has signed an agreement with the US and Canada that allows their nationals to enter without a passport or visa by purchasing a US$10 tourist card. You will need to present proof of citizenship - either an original birth certificate or certified copies with raised seal, an expired passport (if photograph still clearly resembles the bearer), US naturalization certificate or a signed US voter registration card. Aliens who are permanent US residents must have their US alien registration card to return to the US. A drivers license will not suffice as identification.
