ADMISSIONS CRITERIA
Colleges will use some, if not all, of the information listed below when determining whether or not to accept an applicant. Individual colleges, however, will differ in how they evaluate this information. For example, one college may place a great deal of importance on test scores; another college may not.

Many of our students and parents often ask what courses are recommended to satisfy admission requirements to our colleges and universities. The following recommendations will satisfy any college admissions standards and will provide students with the best academic preparation for college level course work. For three days, October 23-25, the Educational Advising Center (EAC), at the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy hosted its second annual College Fair in three cities Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. The EAC College Fair promoted educational study in the United States and offered students a chance to gather first-hand information on the process of applying and attending U.S. universities. The Lagos Fair took place at the Eko Meridien Hotel on October 23. U.S. Embassy representatives at the event were the Country Public Affairs Officer Donald M. Bishop, Consul General Ronald Robinson, Cultural Affairs Officer Shirley Lisenby and the Director of the EAC, Funmi Huntar. Guest speakers who held seminars at the three venues were Toyin Huntar from Prometric Standardized Testing Center, Leroy Nesbit of Middleberry College in Vermont, and Mamadou Barry of Suffolk University in Massachusetts (Dakar campus).

GLOSSARY of TERMS
ACADEMIC SUBJECTS/CORE COURSES Basic, general areas of study taken in high school which are used as a predictor of success in college. Generally, subjects considered under this category include English, mathematics, science, social studies/history, and foreign languages. AMERICAN COLLEGE TESTING PROGRAM (ACT) A standardized college entrance test consisting of four parts: English, math, reading and science reasoning. Most colleges accept either the ACT or SAT I. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) Courses offered in high school which may allow a student to receive college credit upon successfully completing an end-of-the-year, comprehensive examination ASSOCIATE DEGREE A college credential granted usually after two years or approximately 60 hours of college credit of specified study at either a junior college or community college. Some four-year colleges also offer Associate Degree programs. BACHELOR DEGREE A college credential granted after completing a specified program of study usually taking approximately four years of full-time study to complete.

The following is taken from the University of Maryland Undergraduate Catalog: FRESHMAN ADMISSION
The University of Maryland, College Park, is a publicly supported, landgrant, research institution dedicated primarily to the educational needs of Maryland residents. Within its responsibilities as a state institution, the university attracts a cosmopolitan student body and each year offers admission to a number of promising students from other states and jurisdictions. Currently, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 3 territories, and more than 150 foreign countries are represented in the undergraduate population. Admission policies are determined by the Board of Regents. As prescribed by the Board of Regents, the university expects all applicants, at a minimum, to have completed by high school graduation the following course work: four years of English; three years of mathematics, including Algebra I or Applied Math I and II, or geometry; or three years of history or social science; three years of science in at least two different areas with at least two lab sciences; and two years of a foreign language. These criteria represent the minimum requirements to be considered for admission. Successful applicants typically present academic credentials which exceed the minimum, several honors and/or Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, and additional academic electives. A fourth year of mathematics is strongly recommended.

GENERAL INFORMATION School Status: Operating Year of Opening: Mission Statement: We seek to create and sustain an educational community where an emphasis on academic excellence is complemented by a concern for each learner's personal growth and intellectual, aesthetic, and psychological development. Current Number of Students: under 90 Current Grades Served: Middle School, 6, 7, 8 Geographic Area Served: Walton County, Florida Panhandle Facilities: The Seaside Neighborhood School was housed for 1-1/2 years in leased, modular classrooms on the Lyceum in the center of downtown Seaside. Paramount Pictures filmed The Truman Show in Seaside during the winter of 1996. The founders of Seaside, Daryl and Robert Davis, and the Town Council of Seaside homeowners generously donated all location fees to the construction of a permanent schoolhouse. Dedication of the new schoolhouse, designed by architect Richard Gibbs, took place on March 16, 1998. School expansion to a second permanent facility was made possible by a school grant. The School Infrastructure Thrift (SIT) was awarded to Walton County School District for having a charter school operating in its own building, effectively saving the state from spending on public school facilities. The District shared the SIT fund with the charter school. A third building is under construction and scheduled for completion in August of 2001.
