UNICEF Internships Give Students a World of Experience
by Carl Herko When Marguerita Safdie, a graduate student at the School of Nutrition Science and Policy, first arrived in Colombia to begin her internship with UNICEF in the summer of 1996, she had no idea just how important she would be to the international agency. She found out, though, as soon as she arrived at her assignment in Colombia and heard the way she was introduced. "The moment that I got there they said, 'This is Marguerita Safdie, and she is the expert on household food security'." Such is the baptism-of-fire world of international aid, where the needs are many, the resources are few, and someone who was a nutrition student one moment becomes the expert the next. Safdie is one of eight nutrition students who took part in a Tufts/ UNICEF summer internship program that gave them a rare opportunity to work at the international agency's field sites in Asia, Africa and Latin America. "At the School of Nutrition Science and Policy, we've been working hard to prepare graduate students from all over the world to make important contributions in the alleviation of global hunger and malnutrition. One of the most important needs we face in this effort is giving students experience with actual programs in developing countries," says F. James Levinson, director of the International Food and Nutrition Center (

How to Get Involved
In order to prepare students for the world of work, the Columbus Public Schools is now requiring students to participate in internships before graduation. Internships provide an opportunity for students to preview a career by way of "meaningful" workplace experience. Through these internships, the Chamber expects to:
  • Introduce Columbus teens to careers while developing a well-rounded student and potential employee. Demonstrate the connection between what students learn in school and how it applies in the professional world. Encourage students to learn by making classroom work more relevant. Create a labor pool as students involved in local internships tend to remain in Columbus because of exposure to opportunities in the area.
The Chamber will broker and coordinate the internship program and anticipates that 3,000 to 4,000 Columbus Public School students will be placed in internships annually by 2002.
Program Highlights In an attempt to correct this identified skill gap, the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce has become a partner with Columbus Public Schools in developing the

Charles Olson, assistant dean of student development and career services, said the goal of an internship is to obtain practical experience on the job, experience that helps a student determine whether he or she indeed wants to pursue that career. Interns are usually compensated either with pay or with class credit, and they gain professional and leadership skills. ACES students have interned within the university and around the state, nation and world. The type of work done varies, as each department has its own guidelines. Many companies, including Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill and Monsanto, annually offer internships to ACES students. There are also several international internships as well as opportunities to work as a congressional intern in Washington, DC.

Student internships Internship is the American term for a formal period of work experience that involves challenging, graduate-level work. It has swept across Britain in the last few years, where large firms invite students to work for them during the long summer vacation. There are now so many internships available that most major industries are catered for, from retailers, to manufacturing companies, to management consultants There are many reasons why you should consider applying for a student internship in your penultimate year of university. Nothing compares to first-hand experience as a way of learning about a potential occupation. You will develop transferable skills and some placements pay exceedingly well so you can clear your overdraft at the same time. Employers will monitor your performance as you work for them, since many now use internships as their main way of recruiting graduates - placements are frequently offered to screen students for the following year's graduate intake. Many companies now retain more than 70 percent of their work experience recruits! As a result the application procedure tends to be as rigorous and competitive as for final year students. Conversely, employers are also coming to expect internships on the CVs of potential employees. Student internships usually commence at the beginning of June. The deadline for applications for most major corporations in summer 2002 is early February, and due to the demand for internships, most applications are only accepted from second-year or penultimate-year university students.

Check with your department. Some departments have courses that are specifically designated for internships or experiential learning, and special requirements for enrollment. These "field studies" are usually numbered 197. A 199 course is usually reserved for independent study or research.

    Nortel cuts student internships
-Vince Teetaert Troubled Nortel Networks is eliminating nearly all of the internships it offers to Engineering students. "They have canceled most of their intern positions," said Judy Noble, who heads up the Faculty of Engineering's internship program. Nortel issued a profit warning last month and announced it was slashing as many as 15,000 jobs, although Noble says Nortel will honour the contracts it has with current interns. Cam Melvin, the senior stick of the University of Manitoba Engineering Society, says students aren't terribly concerned over having fewer opportunities with Nortel. He says plenty of opportunities still exist with other companies. Doug Ruth, the dean of Engineering, said other technology firms are pleased with Nortel's layoffs and job cuts because those firms will now have greater access to unemployed skilled labour.
