The internship is the Technical Communication Program's capstone experience. Students are encouraged to select a position that corresponds with their own interests and career plans. Internships have occurred in a variety of work settings: from a small public relations firm to a Fortune 500 company, for example, and from a museum of science and technology to a world-renowned motorcycle manufacturer. For additional information regarding internship requirements, contact Dr. Katherine Wikoff , Program Director of Technical Communication. Internships
Q: Why do an internship? A: Internships provide students the opportunity to directly observe and experience human resource and labor relations work and to see the connections between the concepts and ideas discussed in class and the workplace. Students earn college credits, develop valuable contacts and enhance their academic record, making themselves more attractive to a range of employers. Q: When are internships available? A: Students must have completed at least 8 credits of study in the MHRLR Program before obtaining an internship. Internships can be taken in any semester (Spring, Summer or Fall.) Placement dates may overlap semesters. Q: What kind of work do interns do? A: Interns are directly involved in all aspects of human resource and labor relations work. Past work experiences have included:
  • salary and classification analysis affirmative action planning ADA planning employee handbook development EEOC complaint investigation employee relations, benefits and job evaluation assignments

Student Internships / Global Access Strong technical skills are only half of the equation when pursuing a career in IT. Work experience and workforce readiness are the other key components in the career development of students enrolled in the Cisco Networking Academy Program. An important step in getting real work experience and building job readiness is participating in internship or work placement activities.
Although the Cisco Networking Academy Program does not guarantee students an internship placement, we strongly encourage Academies to build local relationships with businesses to provide internships, job shadowing experiences, on site visits at the work place and guest speakers to introduce students to the workplace culture and how the networking skills they are learning fit into the day to day work flow of a business.
If you're already enrolled as a Student in the Networking Academy program, use the "Career Development" links on your Student Home Page to find out more about internships. From your Home Page, you'll have access to the Career Connection web site where you'll find postings for internships and job placements.
