Tips from the GUTS Study Skills Program The purpose of the GUTS Study Skills program is to teach you more effective methods of learning information, regardless of the subject. In essence, we want students to learn how to learn. We address a variety of topics including reading, note-taking, concentration, procrastination, organization, time management, exam preparation, test taking, and test anxiety. There are three different resources available within the program. First, individual appointments with study skills specialists are available by appointment. Stop by the GUTS office in 302A Union South or call 263-5666 to make an appointment. Second, we have a literature file consisting of pamphlets, articles, and handouts available to all students. Finally, we provide workshops on study skills topics. Workshops can be arranged by contacting our office. Through these methods of distributing information, we hope to help you to "work smarter, not harder" in your academic studies.
The purpose of these webpages is to provide interested students with some initial study skills tips. Webpages are available on:

Study Skills Co-ordinator Ms R A Collins , BA e-mail: rac@emanuel.org.uk T he Study Skills department supports pupils of all levels and abilities to help them make the most of their individual learning and thinking styles and to encourage them to become independent learners. The aims of the Study Skills programme are to teach pupils how to think, how to learn and how to learn efficiently by understanding and using the phenomenal power of their brains and their inherent multiple intelligences. C oncerns over performance, such as underachievement, poor organisation or lack of motivation, for example, may be referred by parents, staff or by the students themselves at any time. Pupils are then seen individually or in small groups as necessary. A dditionally, this year, special one-day courses were held for GCSE candidates as they approached their examinations and optional one-day seminars were available for A/S and A level students where they learned that achievement and success are led by self-esteem, positive mental attitude and flexibility. In learning Study Skills, pupils can acquire strategies to help them achieve their goals. Special Needs
O n arrival at Emanuel, pupils are screened, and those with mild forms of special learning needs such as dyslexia or dyspraxia are taught strategies for achieving success within the mainstream environment. Students are generally seen on a one-to-one basis and their progress carefully monitored.

Study Skills
A guide for parents
from the National Association
of School Psychologists Introduction A Positive Experience A high priority Organization ... Resources Overview Many capable children at all grade levels experience frustration and failure in school. It's not because they lack ability, but because they do not have adequate study skills. Good study habits are important for success in school. Knowing how to study effectively fosters feelings of competence, develops positive attitudes, and helps children realize they can control how well they do in school and in life. Good study habits also lay the groundwork for successful work habits as an adult. Teachers and parents must work together to help children learn good study skills. Preferred learning styles vary from child to child. Children need to discover how they learn best, work out a study system that fits their learning style, and use that system regularly. Parents of elementary students usually help their children more than parents of adolescents. However, older students also need parental support and encouragement throughout high school. Four Basic Principles to Enhance Study Skills 1. Make doing homework a positive experience: associate it with love and affection, freedom, fun and self-control.

    Case Studies
What are "case materials"? As used in our website, the phrase "case materials" refers to case studies and simulations, as well as accompanying exhibits and teaching notes. While both case studies and simulations can be used as tools in the "case study teaching method," they are different in form and manner of use. A case study is a narrative that recounts the factual history of an event or series of events. It is typically used as the basis for in-class analysis and discussion. A simulation is a set of facts, roles and rules that establishes the framework for an in-class participatory exercise. Why should I use Stanford case studies or simulations as part of my curriculum? Research has shown that existing law school teaching methods and curricula do not adequately teach students the full complement of "lawyering" skills they need to competently practice law. The traditional appellate case method assumes that a problem has reached a point where litigation is the only alternative, and presents students with a scenario in which all relevant issues have been identified, the questions of law narrowly focused, and the questions of fact resolved. Skills-oriented courses and clinical programs (such as law clinics and externships) have made significant contributions to law schools'9 ability to teach lawyering skills. Their reach, however, has been limited by a combination of factors, including their high cost and the relatively few law students who actually take advantage of these programs.

    Preface
Many students consult me for advice on how to overcome specific difficulties with their studies. I expect there are many more who wish they had written materials to consult but do not know what to look for or where to find it. I wrote this annotated bibliography with those students’ needs in mind. The materials I have reviewed are available from the AU Library. Students can access the AU Library Catalogue online from the Learning Centres or on the World Wide Web. The materials are organized into five sections. "English Grammar" contains books focusing on language usage and spelling. "Exams and Exam Anxiety Reduction" discusses books about exam preparation, taking specific types of exams, and dealing with exam anxiety. "Math and Math Anxiety Reduction" has books that teach and refresh math skills or deal with exam anxiety; the Tobias book does both. "Study Skills" books cover a wide range of study skills and are often a good place for students to begin their reading. "Writing Essays, Research Papers and Reports" focuses on writing major documents.
