    English Dept. classes:
    CS1: Communication Skills
Communication Skills is designed to develop students' abilities in clear, practical writing and enable them to create standard forms of business and technical communications. This is a hands-on, step-by-step course that helps students to build coherent, grammatically correct sentences and to develop paragraphs that use appropriate linking and transitional devices. Students also experiment with common forms of paragraph organization, including comparison and description. In addition, students write and/or study standard workplace communications such as memorandums, business letters, proposals, reports, abstracts, summaries, job applications, resumes, and oral presentations. Students may relate writing assignments to their major field of study. Instructor(s): Bill Sweet, Kathleen Shull, Peter Jensen
    Prerequisites: None
    Offered: Every term
    Writing 115: Preparatory Composition
To familiarize you with the tools of communication, we will examine the basics of grammar, diction, syntax, and rhetoric; practice sentence and paragraph writing; and, finally, construct several short essays. Keeping a daily journal should provide ideas for "regular" papers and help you to discover an individual voice, improve your grammar, allow you to experience writing as a creative act, and, generally, enliven the learning process. Making conference appointments with the instructor, sharing drafts with class peers, and revising materials after teacher and peer suggestions should make that process easier, as well as build your confidence in your abilities.

    Sharon Lozano
I grew up in a small south Texas town, Carrizo Springs. With a population less than 5,500, it's easy to see how coming to Austin would be quite a change. I have a MS in Computational and Applied Mathematics and a BS in Math, both from UT. Most of my teaching experiences have been non-traditional and this is the first time I'll be teaching at UT. I've always enjoyed working with students. I enjoy teaching any mathematics because you can always find something exciting about it and its applications! Currently I am working with a non-profit organization, Girlstart, as the Curriculum Developer. This organization services young women to motivate their interests in mathematics, science, and technology. After all the work is done, I like to play! For fitness, I take kickboxing classes and run. I also take dance classes (mostly Latin). I frequent art galleries, shows at the PAC, quiet parks, hiking trails, movit theaters, and Amy's Ice Cream! And I spend a couple of hours a week at a local retirement home visiting with some of the residents. In short, I try to balance my life. Balance is one of the most important characteristics of any successful person - including students. You should do and study the things you love and balance your life with enriching experiences. Another characteristic of successful students is humility. It's important to remember you're not perfect and it's OK to ask questions. In the end, these things will take you where you want to be.
