http://proofread.com/resources/elements/composition.htm

Usage
Composition Form Words
Composition 9. Make the paragraph the unit of composition: one paragraph to each topic. If the subject on which you are writing is of slight extent, or if you intend to treat it very briefly, there may be no need of subdividing it into topics. Thus a brief description, a brief summary of a literary work, a brief account of a single incident, a narrative merely outlining an action, the setting forth of a single idea, any one of these is best written in a single paragraph. After the paragraph has been written, it should be examined to see whether subdivision will not improve it. Ordinarily, however, a subject requires subdivision into topics, each of which should be made the subject of a paragraph. The object of treating each topic in a paragraph by itself is, of course, to aid the reader. The beginning of each paragraph is a signal to him that a new step in the development of the subject has been reached. The extent of subdivision will vary with the length of the composition. For example, a short notice of a book or poem might consist of a single paragraph. One slightly longer might consist of two paragraphs:
    A. Account of the work.

    Welcome
Brief History of Computers and Composition Editing Philosophy and Profile ... Global Changes FORMATTING AND STYLE CONVENTIONS Computers and Composition follows the style guidelines in the 4th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA Manual); however, due to the growth in the study of relationships between computers and the teaching of writing, we have had to modify and/or clarify the way we handle some situations. In this section, we alert you both conventional style choices and to the exceptions to the APA style; present those style guidelines for situations unanticipated by the APA manual; and provide examples to clarify style questions that frequently seem to arise. Assistant Editors must be careful not to make changes too quickly. As you work with a number of manuscripts, you learn what can be changed and what must remain as is, even if you wouldn't have written it that way. Of course, Assistant Editors correct grammar and punctuation errors. However, you must be able to indicate in the appropriate handbooks the guidelines that support your suggested changes.
Apostrophes Computers and Composition uses the smart apostrophes format (') rather than the straight apostrophe ('). Often, because authors submit manuscripts as Rich-Text Format documents, quotation marks are converted to straight quotes. Assistant Editors should mark these as they copy edit manuscripts.

COM 421: Policies At the beginning of the semester, familiarize yourself with policies about important aspects of COM 421. The following information may be found on this page (scroll or click to jump down to a topic). Due Dates
Due Dates for all assignments and other homework are listed in your instructor's syllabus for your section. Assignments are due on the day specified unless you have previously arranged a different date with the instructor. Some instructors allow late papers without penalty, some penalize late papers by lowering the grade, and others do not accept any late papers. Be sure to review your instructor's individual syllabus for the specific policy observed in your section. Major projects must be completed by the date assigned. During the first several weeks of the course, most homework assignments will emphasize readings and drafts. You should be familiar with assigned readings when you come to class, so that you will be prepared to participate in discussions. During the last half of the course, your homework will emphasize writing assignments for grades. Format for Written Assignments
The first page of all written assignments should follow these guidelines (unless your instructor specifies otherwise): Firstname Lastname top line, aligned flush right, Helvetica or Arial font, size 12
