You will succeed as a substitute teacher to the extent that you render a professional service. As a substitute teacher you are an important staff member of Wyandotte Public Schools. When professional staff members are ill, called away by personal business or attending staff development meetings, you must be ready to replace them. Often you will be given very short notice. This demands that you be flexible, knowledgeable and able to establish rapport with students immediately. Because substitute teaching is a difficult job, the information below has been prepared to help you understand the essential aspects of your job. Topics covered are:
  • Substitute Teacher Requirements Application Procedures We are glad you have chosen Wyandotte Public Schools to work as a substitute teacher. by Mike Collison What if someone offered you an opportunity to get deep into your local secondary schools? Not just a monthly lunch or after-school ball game, but from 8 AM to 2:30 PM.? What if they paid you to hang out with the same students with whom you voluntarily spend your time? Then imagine being a substitute teacher. "Is it good to be alive?" I asked the 22 students just after the bell rang. "My name is Mr. Collison, not Collision. I'll be your substitute today." "Can I call you Mike," a wise guy asks. "Only if you know me in my other life," I retort. "Are you that guy from that youth group or church or something," a girl asks. "Yeah, I work at Orchard Hill, but I love to spend my day off here," I reply sarcastically (laughter erupts). "My friend went on one of your trips," the girl continues. "Which one? We do lots of trips. Caving? Ministry tour? Work trip? Homeless outreach?"

SUBSTITUTE TEACHING POLICY I. On occasion, STEP Student Teachers with particularly strong skills (based upon Cooperating Teacher and STEP Supervisor evaluations) may serve as substitute teachers for their Cooperating Teachers only The purpose of this is to provide continuity in the Cooperating Teacher’s classrooms and additional experience for the STEP Teacher without interrupting the STEP Teacher’s own assignment. STEP Teachers may not become a part of the regular substitute teacher pool A written request must be submitted to the STEP Director. Permission to substitute is granted by the STEP Director, in consultation with the Placement Coordinator II. STEP Teachers with permission to substitute agree to take responsibility for meeting all of their regular STEP and Stanford assignments. But these, and other events, shaped Agee's first day of substitute teaching. "My first day of substitute teaching was awful," Agee said. "I wasn't sure I wanted to come back for the second day."

After 17 years of teaching and many more in the business sector, I
am now retired but spending 3 days a week being a substitute
teacher. It is a blast, keeps my mind active and I enjoy the
    experiences very much.
Many teachers and substitutes I met were wishing there
were a guide that would help subs as they moved into the
classroom. With the assistance of full time teachers, substitutes
and even the students, I wrote a short guide that is full of helpful
suggestions, tips and lesson plans. If you are considering being a sub part time, click on the link
