Greta Fowler July 2, 2002 (Lexington, Ky.) When Greta Barnes Fowler moved to Lexington in 1998 to join her husband who had taken a job a year earlier at IBM, she could not find a job in her own field of biology and microbiology. Fowler's mother, an elementary school teacher in Birmingham, Ala., suggested she try substitute teaching. "I am so glad she suggested that," Fowler said.

Ever been a substitute teacher? I have. It was the spring of 1989. I was studying toward a Master of Public Administration degree at Virginia Tech, the large state university located in my home town of Blacksburg, Virginia. Having finished my undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia in three quick years and immediately gone on toward a master's degree, I was in a position when I signed up for substitute teaching to work alongside teachers I'd gotten C-'s from just four years earlier. Or so I'd thought when I signed up to be a substitute teacher. The money wasn't bad, $45.00 per day, and I hoped to get work three or four days a week, which would have worked nicely for me since almost all of my classes in graduate school were held in the evening. It struck me as a good deal: since I had SOME KIND of college degree, I was considered qualified to ride herd over schoolkids in some cases only four years younger than I was myself, and said herd-riding would involve essentially no work and a fine opportunity to engage in power-trips. Eastern Michigan University teacher educators prepare knowledgeable professionals who are caring professional educators for a diverse and democratic society. The College of Education at Eastern Michigan University is a partner with local school districts in the training of tomorrow's teachers. Through the use of student teachers serving as substitute teachers, the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University hopes to both improve the field experiences of student teachers and make an impact in the classrooms of school districts where these student teachers are placed. SUBSTITUTE TEACHING PERMIT
The Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) has recommended a significant change in application procedures for substitute teaching permits. The intent of the program is to streamline the process of hiring substitute teachers for corporations by eliminating any unnecessary requirements. Each school corporation will determine the standards for the substitute teachers within that school district. How to Obtain a Substitute Teaching Permit Contact the school corporation in which you wish to substitute teach to obtain requirements and an application. Each school corporation determines the requirements for the substitute teachers within that school district. (See the Indiana School Directory at http://www.doe.state.in.us/publications/schooldirectory.html for a listing of school corporations.) 2. Be recommended by the school corporation. The superintendent or his/her designee will sign the completed application and forward it to the Indiana Professional Standards Board Division of Licensing. Be issued the substitute teaching permit by the Indiana Professional Standards Board Division of Licensing. The certificate will be mailed to the school corporation.

Substitute Teaching (GBRJ)
Qualified substitute teachers shall be secured for the district. The superintendent (shall/may) meet with potential substitutes before the start of each school year. The superintendent shall compile a list of approved substitute teachers, and each building principal shall have a copy of the list prior to the beginning of each school year. The superintendents office shall be responsible for obtaining substitute teachers and employing them as needed. The principals shall be responsible for developing a substitute's handbook. The board shall establish the rate of pay for substitute teachers each July. Approved: NOVEMBER 18, 1996
Substitute Teaching (GBRJ-R)
Candidates will receive a substitute's handbook, an explanation of the substitute program, application forms, and necessary tax forms and other records to be completed. The handbook shall include information on when and how candidates should apply to be substitutes, the rates of pay, the time of the morning or day that substitutes can expect to be called for duty, instructions on where to report for all district attendance centers, maps of the school district and of each attendance center, a current copy of the school calendar, a copy of the board's educational philosophy (see IA), hints on working with students, a statement of expectations the district has for substitutes, a list of things the substitute must do before leaving for the day and a sample report form for reporting incidents that may take place during the day.

There are two (2) Michigan legislative requirements that all schools in Michigan must follow before employing a substitute teacher:
  • - Includes fingerprinting which is done at our office and then sent to the State Police Post for processing. The applicant must pay a $54 processing fee payable (by check or money order) to the State of Michigan. Unprofessional Conduct Check - Branch ISD is required to contact any current or past employers to make certain there has not been any unprofessional misconduct.
  • We will need a copy of your teaching certificate (or college transcripts if applying for a permitsee below) when you come in to register. If you have an expired Michigan teaching certificate, you may qualify for a "Special 150-Day Permit" issued through the Department of Education. The Department of Education charges a $25 annual fee per school year for this permit. The permit allows the individual to sub a maximum of 150 days in a school year, any grade level or assignment. Substitute work pays $80 per day, $45 per half-day.

  • List of students in class(es). Star students who could be trusted as helpers for the sub. Description of class routines . Beginning of the day/ hour are the most difficult times for a sub. Letting them know the morning or beginning of hour routines will help the sub tremendously. Other class routines may include; how attendance is taken or collected, how students line up or when it is appropriate to let students go to the bathroom. Teacher's Schedule: What classes the teacher teaches, TIMES, rooms, and any extra duty assignments. Give directions so subs can locate any rooms they may have to take students to. Also give good details as to what is expected of them during their extra duty assignment.
