ARCHAEOLOGY IN SUDAN The home of the earliest kingdoms and civilisations south of the Sahara, the rich archaeological heritage of Sudan and Nubia still remains little known. In a vast country, archaeological work is still thinly spread and under-resourced. Archaeologists are only at the very beginning of the study of the first great kingdom of Sudan at Kerma (c.2500-1500 BCE), the Kushite/Meroitic Empire (c.800 BCE-350 CE), the prosperous medieval Nubian kingdoms and the great Sultanates of Funj Sennar and Darfur of the post-medieval period. Unfortunately very little archaeological work has ever been carried out in southern Sudan so, as yet, we know very little of its early past. While the name 'Nubia' is commonly associated with the areas of the far north of Sudan, and southern Egypt, medieval Nubia (the land of the 'Nuba'/'Noba') was a much greater region, extending far to the south of Khartoum - while the family of Nubian languages seems to have been widespread across much of what is now west, central and northern Sudan. It has become traditional to refer to all the ancient inhabitants of this region as 'Nubian', although that name is of relatively recent origin, first appearing in historical texts during the mid-first millennium BCE.

For Middle East, North Africa, Arab and regional information visit Arab Countries Sudan History Northeast Sudan, called Nubia in ancient times, was colonized by Egypt about 2000 B.C. and was ruled by the Cush kingdom from the 8th cent. B.C. to the 4th cent A.D. Most of Nubia was converted to Coptic Christianity in the 6th cent., but by the 15th cent. Islam prevailed. In 1821 the north was conquered by Egypt, but a revolt by the nationalist Mahdi in 1881 forced an Egyptian withdrawal. In the 1890s an Anglo-Egyptian force under Herbert Kitchener destroyed the theocratic Mahdist state, and in 1899 most of Sudan came under the joint rule of Egypt and Britain (with Britain exercising actual control). Independence was achieved in 1956. In 1955 the animist southerners, fearing that the new nation would be dominated by the Muslim north, began a civil war that lasted 17 years. In 1972 Pres. Muhammad Gaafar al-Nimeiry ended the war by granting the south a measure of autonomy. However, his imposition of Islamic law on the entire country in 1983 reopened the conflict, and an estimated 1.5 million have died since. Nimeiry was deposed by a military coup in 1986. A short-lived civilian government was overthrown in 1989 by Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir; he officially became president in 1993 and was elected to the post in 1996. Bashir's government reinstituted Islamic law, banned opposition parties, and jailed dissidents.

Sudan CULTURE Sudan is a miniature representation of Africa: a large country with geographic, extremes ranging from sandy desert to tropical forest. It has about 600 tribes who have Arabic as their common language, beside there are about 142 different languages. The cuisine is a melding of the many varied backgrounds of the people who live in the Sudan's land. The ritual of hospitality is as important in the Sudan as it is in other Arab and African countries. And while there is a measure of similarity in all the Arab and African countries, each has its unique characteristics. For example, no other country prepares coffee as the Sudanese do, and if this country acquired culinary fame, it is for its Sudanese Jebena (Special made Sudanese Coffee). The Sudanese fry their coffee beans in a special pot over charcoal and then grind it with cloves and certain spices. They steep it in hot water and serve it lovingly in tiny coffee cups after straining it through a special tresh grass sieve. In Sudan, if you are an important guest, a sheep will be slaughtered in your honor. Many dishes will then be prepared, each more delicious than the last. Favorite meats are lamb and chicken. Rice is the staple starch. Breads are the Arabian Khubz, but the Sudanese also make Kisra, an omelette- like pancake which is part of the Sudanese dinner. Vegetables, fresh and cooked, are of infinite variety. The okra, is an important ingredient in a (Bamia dish)- Bamia is an okra lamb stew. You must try Maschi, a triple tomato dish stuffed with beef, as it is such fun to make. As in most Arabic countries, fruits are peeled and cut in small slices for dessert, but the Sudanese also love sweets and every housewife knows how to make Creme Caramela Custard. You will like their unusual teas which can be made quite simply. But if you prefer to serve coffee, make it a demitasse.
