Sudan: overview of involvement of Royal Netherlands Embassy at Nairobi Role of Netherlands Embassy at Nairobi A substantial part of the humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese population is delivered from Kenyan territory and many humanitarian organisations and southern opposition movements have offices in Nairobi. The Netherlands Embassy in Nairobi is entrusted with the task to advice on Humanitarian policies for South Sudan, to monitor assistance delivered to the Sudanese population in areas under control of the Southern opposition movements and to report on political developments with respect to Sudan. Peace negotiations Peace negotions between one of the southern opposition movements, the Sudan People Liberation Movements (SPLM) and the government are conducted under the auspices of the Inter Governmental Authority and Developement (IGAD), an international organisation for the Horn of Africa, Members are Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somali, Sudan and Uganda. IGAD has negotiated a framework for negotiations, the Declaration of Principles. Negotiations usually take place in Kenya. Kenya is the chair of the IGAD-committee for the Sudan. The Netherlands supports also "the initiative to facilitate the participation of Sudanese women in the peace process". The aim of the initiative is not only to give support to the efforts and contribution of Sudanese women and men bringing about a culture of peace whilst promoting non-violent forms of conflict resolution, but also to increase the actual participation and the influence of Sudanese women towards the peace and eventually the development process. Active participation of women in peace making is known to modify and influence the vision of building efforts by the Sudanese women and men. In the coming years more attention will be paid to capacity building of Sudanese women and the organisations.

    85. Islamic Culture
Mohamed Ali Pasha, Ottoman Turkish ruler of Egypt, conquered sudan in 1821,but the Mahdi overthrew the Egyptian colonial government in 1881.
    http://www.anth.ucsb.edu/faculty/stsmith/research/islamic.html
With the assistance of the Mamluk rulers of Egypt, the Kingdom of Makuria fell to the Juhayna Arabs through a combination of conquest and intermarriage in the mid 14th century. Nubia quickly adopted the Arabic language and the religion of Islam. The Dongola Reach soon came under the sway of the far-flung Funj kingdom, or al-Saltana al-Zarqa (the Black Sultanate). Mohamed Ali Pasha, Ottoman Turkish ruler of Egypt, conquered Sudan in 1821, but the Mahdi overthrew the Egyptian colonial government in 1881. Sudan enjoyed a brief period of independence under him and his successor the Khalifa Abdallahi. British General Lord Kitchener defeated the Mahdist army led by the Khalifa in 1898 at the Battle of Omdurman, bringing Sudan under Anglo-Egyptian colonial rule until it gained independence from Egypt in 1956. These struggles are reflected in the survey area by several substantial Qasr (fortresses) and Diffi (fortified mansions). Qasr Khandaq was the oldest, going back to Christian times. Qasr Wad Nemeri was the largest, accompanied by over forty Qubbas, domed funerary monuments to important individuals and holy men or sheikhs. The fortress at el-Kab was perhaps connected to the famous Darb al-Arba'in (Forty Days Road), a key route funneling camels, slaves, and valuable trade goods into Egypt. Artifacts
Islamic pottery from the Sudan is often hand made with incised decoration.

    Sudan
Sudan Section > The Society and its Environment The Nile is the link that runs through Sudan, and influences the lives of Sudan's people, even though many of them farm and herd far from the Nile or its two main tributaries, the Blue Nile and the White Nile. Not only do nomads come to the river to water their herds and cultivators to drain off its waters for their fields, but the Nile facilitates trade, administration, and urbanization. Consequently, the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile became the administrative center of a vast hinterland because the area commanded the river, its commerce, and its urban society. This location enabled the urban elites to control the scattered and often isolated population of the interior while enjoying access to the peoples of the outside world. The Sudanese of the south are of African origin. Islam has made only modest inroads among these followers of traditional religions and of Christianity, which was spread in the twentieth century by European missionaries, and Arabic has not replaced the diverse languages of the south. The differences between north and south have usually engendered hostility, a clash of cultures that in the last 150 years has led to seemingly endless violence. The strong regional and cultural differences have inhibited nation building and have caused the civil war in the south that has raged since independence, except for a period of peace between 1972 and 1983. The distrust between Sudanese of the north and those of the southwhether elite or peasantshas deepened with the long years of hostilities. And the cost of war has drained valuable national resources at the expense of health, education, and welfare in both regions.

    http://www.arab.net/sudan/sn_food.htm
Basic foodstuffs are available for purchase in most towns, and local markets are quite well-stocked with fruit, vegetables, peanuts and spices. Despite a recent history of famine and starvation which is now only a memory for large parts of the population, Sudanese people are incredibly hospitable, and will willingly share what little food they have with visitors and travelers. Sudanese cooking is extremely simple, with little or no use of spices. Seasoning is generally confined to salt and pepper and lemon juice. Meals are eaten from a communal bowl, using the fingers of the right hand in accord with religious practice. The most common dishes are as follows (although these are not always available): Meat and poultry. Chicken is usually stewed and served in a broth, while lamb can be skewered as a kebab, or cooked on a bed of coals and served with salad. This dish can also be made with beef and is known as shayya
For those whose taste runs to offal, there is kammonia , a dish made from the stomach of a sheep, stewed and served with onions and tomatoes. Liver and kidney dishes are also popular: kibda is skewered or stewed liver, and
