3. Rutgers Geography Department
The Rutgers Department of geography was inaugurated on April 6, 1949, although geography had been taught in one form or another since the beginning of the University as Queen's College in 1766. Simeon DeWitt, one of the first graduates of Queen's College, became a geographer for the Revolutionary Army and subsequently for the State of New York, where he was responsible for surveying and mapping much of the classical placename belt in the west-central portion of that state.

EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY SURVEYING AND MAPPING SCIENCE East Tennessee State University has one of the top Surveying and Mapping programs in the United States. Teaching surveying has been a long tradition and in 1987 the existing program was revised and expanded. The goal was to create a four-year degree in surveying and mapping science that could meet the needs of the surveying profession in the central southeastern region of the nation. The program has been accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ASAC of ABET) [formerly Related Accreditation Commission (RAC of ABET) since July 1994. SURVEYING AND MAPPING EDUCATION Requests for increased college education in the specialization of land surveying and mapping have been on the rise for over 20 years. Many states now require professional surveyors to attend professional development seminars annually. The requirements for new licensees have also been modified to include a formal education component. In Tennessee, all applicants for new license after July 2003, will need a four-year degree in Surveying and Mapping or a degree in a closely related field and a minimum number of credit hours in surveying courses. The ETSU program meets all of these requirements. Seniors in the program are allowed to take the LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) exam. This is day one of the professional licensing process.

INTRODUCTION
The emphasis in the development of Surveying and Mapping (SAM) Programs in the United States is towards regionalization. Bigger is not necessarily better. Although strong regional programs in surveying and mapping are welcomed, each state should maintain the capability of providing surveying and mapping education in support of a variety of local requirements. Large universities, especially the state land grant universities, with strong programs in civil engineering and geography can provide a viable surveying and mapping program, at the state level, with existing courses through interdisciplinary cooperation. The pros and cons of both regional-based and state-based surveying and mapping programs can be argued ad infinitum without a definite conclusion. Perhaps both approaches should be considered even in these times of major educational cutbacks. However, several considerations should be made by state and local surveying and mapping groups before they discontinue supporting state-based surveying and mapping programs. Some relevant considerations are the following:
  • Regional programs may not produce a sufficient number of graduates to satisfy the state's needs.
  • 14. Internet Public Library: Geography

    Geomatics (Surveying and Mapping)
The Department of Civil Engineering offers degree programs directly concerned with the activities of our society and the infrastructural systems used by security. Two accredited degree programs of study are available, civil engineering and geomatics. Geomatics applies the geographic sciences to the needs of society. Present land values, rates of land development and environmental concerns require a broadly educated person to develop, manage and apply land information. Surveyors and mappers, the practicing component of geomatics, provide professional services and their decisions have far-reaching effects. Geomatics technology addresses land information development and management. Geomatics students master methods of determining spatial relationships of important land features along with pertinent attributes: field survey, photogrammetry, aerial mapping, remote sensing mapping and satellite positioning. Information is then integrated into digital land or geographic information systems and made suitable for use and analysis by a variety of disciplines. The surveyor and mapper is a land professional, knowing the broad issues of land along with the technical and legal requirements for stable land parcel development and management. In addition, surveyors and mappers provide many vital services in land and engineering development work such as topographic mapping, geometric design and construction layout. The program prepares for state registration as a professional surveyor and mapper if the student wishes to pursue that career direction.
