Bigger is not necessarily better. Although strong regional programs in surveying and mapping are welcomed, each state should maintain the capability of providing surveying and mapping education in support of a variety of local requirements. Large universities, especially the state land grant universities, with strong programs in civil engineering and geography can provide a viable surveying and mapping program, at the state level, with existing courses through interdisciplinary cooperation. The pros and cons of both regional-based and state-based surveying and mapping programs can be argued ad infinitum without a definite conclusion. Perhaps both approaches should be considered even in these times of major educational cutbacks. However, several considerations should be made by state and local surveying and mapping groups before they discontinue supporting state-based surveying and mapping programs. Some relevant considerations are the following: Regional programs may not produce a sufficient number of graduates to satisfy the state's needs.
