The 2002 award ceremony was held on the H.M.S. Warrior in Portsmouth, England. Jo-Ann Burke, University of East London, received a highly commended award for her creative work on ecotourism in northern Montserrat (a Caribbean island administered by Britain). Since 1995 volcanic eruptions have devastated southern Montserrat. Jo-Ann has returned to Montserrat to do mapping for its government and "to help it through the struggle." Jo-Ann received a certificate, the World Explorer map and the National Geographic Atlas of the World

CARTOGRAPHY DIVISION
Padma Vibhushan Prof. M. G. K. Menon
It is my great pleasure to be with you this evening and deliver the Todar Mal Memorial Lecture. I regard myself as part of you. Surveying, mapping technology and the like are equally my concerns. Those of you who come from Kerala, the state to which I belong, would know that my last name Menon stands for the persons concerned with property ownership, surveying and boundary demarcation. So I have an association with all those activities which concern you as cartographers.
Apart from that, the Survey of India, as a part of the Department of Science and Technology, was under my charge for some time. In that capacity, I tried to integrate a variety of activities in the fields of micro-electronics, computers, remote sensing, national natural resource management system and planning. Maps are required practically for all purposes. Map making is emerging as an important field of modern day life. This skill formation is a direct part of geographic learning. Geography, with cartography as one its methodologies, is an extremely important discipline.
Cartography is much more than simple preparations of maps. It has a human aspect as well. Every map has always a message to convey, especially for those involved in the process of planning. Thus, cartography is the most vital input for planning.

Annual Survey of Service Industries: Surveying and Mapping
    Status:
    Active
    Description:
The survey objective is the collection and dissemination of data necessary for the statistical analysis of the surveying and mapping industry.
The information from the survey can be used by businesses for market analysis, by trade associations to study performance and other characteristics of their industries, by government to develop national and regional economic policies, and by other users involved in research or policy making.
The data were produced as part of Statistics Canada's Unified Enterprise Survey (UES), the main purpose of which is to ensure Statistics Canada receives consistent and integrated data from many types of surveys and sizes of businesses with enough detail to produce accurate provincial statistics.
    Statistical Program:
The Unified Enterprise Survey (UES) Program incorporates several annual business surveys into a single framework, using questionnaires with a consistent look, structure and content. The 2000 version of the UES encompasses over 20 surveys. The standard UES questionnaires collect consistent data from large and small businesses in different industries. The combined results produce more coherent and accurate statistics on the economy, particularly at the provincial/territorial level. Through the unified approach, firms operating in different industries provide similar information for each branch operation. In contrast, most of Statistics Canada's 200 regular business surveys are designed to collect information from a particular industry. Consequently, their questions and even concepts or definitions often differ from one survey to another. Each year, Statistics Canada is integrating more of these existing surveys into the UES program.
