Proceedings foreword
ScanGIS'95
The Scandinavian Research Conference on GIS (ScanGIS) is the premier research forum for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Scandinavia. The first ScanGIS conference was arranged in Sweden in 1985, the second was held in Norway, the third took place in Denmark and the fourth was held in Finland in 1992. During the last conference it was asked : " do we need a ScanGIS conference in the modern European Scandinavia?". ScanGIS'92 did give a positive answer to this question, and I hope ScanGIS'95 will continue this positive tradition and be a fruitful meeting place for GIS researchers. Unlike most other GIS meetings, ScanGIS has been established to bring together a relative small group of interdisciplinary researchers who are working on the concepts for the next generation geographical information systems. For the first time, the conference was announced on Internet and most of the correspondence with the authors was on e- mail. Internet made it possible to announce ScanGIS'95 to a broad community of researchers, and I am very pleased to recognise the interest for ScanGIS'95 amoung GIS researchers in Scandinavia as well as outside Scandinavia.

The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic names information. Information about foreign geographic feature names can be obtained from the GEOnet Names Server, developed and maintained by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. The Antarctica Geographic Names Data Base contains geographic names in Antarctica which are approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names for use by the Federal Government.

Geomatics is the modern scientific term referring to the integrated approach of measurement, analysis, and management of the descriptions and locations of Earth-based data, often termed spatial data. These data come from many sources, including earth orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors and ground based instruments. It is processed and manipulated with state-of-the-art information technology using computer software and hardware. Programs Research Links People ...
