It also has links to regional resources that have information on museums not found on the main list. There are also castles and manors listed. Art galleries and information on art in Sweden can be found at Sunet . (E) And not all of the art is confined to Stockholm or Göteborg . The egalitarian Swedes share it around the country. I went to visit Norrköping Konstmuseet one rainy day. We didn’t expect much from a regional gallery, but I was stunned by the sheer quality of the works on display. So I came away very much chastened. The National Portrait Gallery (with over 4,000 portraits) is located in Gripsholms Slot t in the beautiful town of Mariefred (E) (S)– another great day-trip!

The NORDIC FAQ
These pages try to answer many questions foreigners to the Nordic countries could have. However, we have no intention what-so-ever to cover "all" questions. Basically, you here find topics which have been regular questions in the Usenet newsgroup S OC .C ULTURE .N ORDIC The contributions to these pages are made by the Usenet participants during the years, which make them less coherent than sites produced by a single person. The good thing is that different Nordic opinions often are represented.
Soc.culture.nordic FAQ
The Frequently Answered Questions (FAQ) document from the Usenet newsgroup S OC .C ULTURE .N ORDIC is a very good source of information about the Nordic countries As it was made available to the Internet in 1994, and web-ified in 1996, it was perhaps the best one. Today there are governmental sites which without questions are better in the sense that they cover the topics more completely and evenly. (See below for links to these governmental sites.) The niche of this FAQ is such topics which are commonly misunderstood by foreigners, and those topics which are commonly disputed inbetween Nordic people, although the first requirement to include a topic here is that some kind of consensus is established among (a large majority of) the participants of the newsgroup. Accordingly Finland's Civil War (1918) and Continuation War (1941-1944) are topics not yet covered. Note that the S OC .C

Swedish model The nation has its roots in the different kingdoms of the Viking Age, and is said to have been created when the king of the Svenonians Svearna assumed kingship over Goths ("Götarna") as well in early middle ages. The word "Sverige" ("Sweden" short for "Svea rike" in Swedish) comes from the Svenonians; "Sverige" means the realm of the Svenonians. The English form of the name is probably derived from an old Germanic form, Svetheod, meaning the Swedish people. In medieval times the Swedes also pushed north to colonize the province now known as Norrland, and over the Baltic Sea to conquer Finland. Sweden has a relatively homogeneous population in ethnic stock, language, and religion. Because of the country's isolation only few non-Swedes have intermixed with the Swedes before very recent times; the major groups that have done so were Finns 1580-1660 and Walloons from present-day Belgium, who settled in the Bergslagen area in the 1620s. Groups that maintain their distinct ethnic identity today include a Finnish minority on the border to Finland (in Tornedalen and adjacent areas), about 15,000 Sámi, and recent immigrants.

Forest for every one?

The Trials Land is life!
Land right conflict - Court cases Without the right to graze on Multiple forest use Neither forestry nor reindeer herding can claim superior rights to the forests in northern Sweden. This calls for rules governing the coexistence of both these land uses on the same land. Mutual respect for both trades and compliance with the fact that both parties may experience damage to their interests; the forestry and the reindeer grazing. Since 1960's forest management practices consisting of clear-cut logging, monoculture plantations and other new techniques have been dominant in Sweden. Modern forestry has been an impoverishing factor for both reindeer grazing and the biological diversity. Large areas of winter grazing land have deteriorated. Large forestry companies, as well as the state, fully accept reindeer herding on their forest land and do not claim any damages to their forests from it. The conflict has arisen only on privately owned land, which makes up about 50 per cent of Swedish forests.
