Not fun. It's never a pleasure to be knocked out of a tournament. Not in this way.
Everything was perfect, since I had a great laugh with friends at a music festival, and last night, or Sunday morning, Sweden was facing Senegal. The majority of the 30 000 visitors to the festival in the Swedish woods watched the game in the area, on a big screen. All relaxed after Henrik Larssons last goal in the jersey, people was singing and laughing about the easy road to final we where suppose to get.
But I all happened so fast. Senegal are a good side, and even if Sweden played boring long balls we couldn't keep it to full time. Worries was around, some where shaking after three days in a wet festival.
Then, in over time, Anders Svensson does a fantastic dribble, I tried as well later - but I scored… We all know Svensson hit the post and out, while the Africans hit the post and in. Football can be fair and unfair.
Sweden thinks they done a good job in Asia anyway. We won the "Group of dead", lots of players are young and learned a lot for upcoming cups. Future looks good.

But the number and variety of fortifications, assembly places, votive sites and graves is impressive. The Viking Age was getting under way by the 9th century, and vast repositories of Roman, Byzantine and Arab coins attest to the wealth and power Swedish Vikings accumulated over the next century. Vikings travelled mostly to the east, making their mark in Russia, as well as trading with (and pillaging) Byzantine territories.

Culture of Sweden -
Travel to Sweden with
Voigt Travel The best known members of Sweden's artistic community have been writers: chiefly the influential dramatist and author August Strindberg and the widely translated children's writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking. The Gustavian balladry of Carl Michael Bellman, rarely heard outside Scandinavia, speaks directly to the Swedish soul. Vilhelm Moberg, a representative of 20th century proletarian literature, won international acclaim with The Immigrants and The Emigrants. Carl von Linné was an 18th century scientist who made pioneering field studies of plant species using Latin names. Still better known is Alfred Nobel, first patron of the Nobel Institute and the coveted international prizes. Swedish is a Germanic language, belonging to the Nordic branch, and is spoken throughout Sweden and in parts of Finland. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians can, however, make themselves mutually understood since their languages are similar. Most Swedes speak English as a second language, so lazy tongues can get away without wrapping themselves round those Swedish vowels. Sweden has a Lutheran state church, which all citizens in principle join (in fact about 95% of citizens are members). The state, however, guarantees religious freedom. Hungry Swedes tuck into fish which is usually poached or fried in lard. Pickled herring is especially popular and the potato is basically indispensable. As well as being the vegetable of ubiquity, spuds are critically important in the production of excellent Swedish aquavit. Strong beer, wines and spirits are sold by the state monopoly Systembolaget at outlets in the cities and towns, which are open weekdays. You must normally decide what you want from price lists and displays and then take a number and wait: Friday afternoon queues can be long.

EUROPEAN EMIGRATION
Swedish emigration to America is rather typical for European emigration westward to America during the 19th century. Therefore, we have elected to present the background of the Swedish emigration at that time. Painting "The Emigrants" by Swedish artist Knut Ekwall, (1843-1912). This painting depicts the artist's vision of what the Atlantic crossings could be like for the immigrants. Courtesy by Lena Björk Kaplan, President of the American Scandinavian Foundation in New York, owner of this beautiful work.
A Review of Swedish Emigration to America The history of Swedish emigration to America goes further back in time than that of the United States. Swedes started to come in 1638, just eighteen years after the landing of the "MAYFLOWER." The tidal wave of Swedish emigration began in the mid 1840s, when the first organized emigrant groups started to arrive in New York. These farmers destined to Iowa and Illinois were followed during the period up to 1930 by almost 1.3 million countrymen. The Swedes still rank number seven among the European immigrant groups. In proportion to the population of their home countries, only the British Isles and Norway surpassed Sweden in the number of immigrants. The effect of this exodus from Sweden reached its climax around 1910, when 1.4 million Swedish first and second generation immigrants were listed as living in the U.S. Compare this to Sweden's population at the time: 5.5 million. Roughly one fifth of all Swedes had their homes in America right before World War I !

It will be somewhat useful for my proposed short trip this summer, particularly since my partner will be involved in academic issues and a conference during our trip. I suspect there is a better book to prepare for a short visit, but I haven't found it yet. Some parts of the Swedish character as portrayed ring *very true*, especially the idea that they have the best way figured out. I've seen that my whole life with my relatives who are first generation American from Sweden, and it even persists into the second generation. (but maybe that's me too! :-) )

Noble legacy
The Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel (1833 - 1896) was the inventor of dynamite. This explosive greatly simplified the task of extracting the ores and raw materials needed for the manufacture of machines, locomotives and motor vehicles and so made a significant contribution to the industrial development of the world. In his will, Nobel specified that the income from his fortune should be distributed every year in the form of awards - Nobel Prizes - to men or women who had "brought the greatest benefits to the human race" in their given field of endeavour.
Coffee addicts
Along with Finland, Sweden is one of the biggest consumers of coffee in Europe. Order a coffee in a Swedish café or restaurant and you will only have to pay for the first cup - refills are free. Coffee is drunk at breakfast, after lunch, during the obligatory coffee breaks and especially at the popular kaffereps, (coffee parties), none of which is complete without a choice of at least seven different types of biscuits and cakes.
Free speakers
Swedes are impressively casual in their social contacts. On meeting a stranger, they usually waste little time in moving to friendly first-name terms and only in the presence of royalty would you expect them to show any hint of formality. Sex and class play little role in Swedish society. This can be seen in the media, which prides itself on its openness. In fact, Sweden was the first country to introduce freedom of the press by law - in 176
