[ By: Ahrvid Engholm Johan Olofsson and Antti Lahelma
For some Swedish towns and provinces there actually exist English forms of the names, but in the news group and in this faq you will discover that Gothenburg and Göteborg, Scania and Skåne or Dalecarlia and Dalarna are used interchangeably without any intended difference in meaning. Sweden occupies the Eastern part of the Scandinavian peninsula. It's a long (1572 kilometers) and rather narrow country, and the largest of the Nordic countries. It shares a long border with Norway to the west and a shorter border with Finland in the east; Denmark lies to the south across the Danish straits, over one of which (Öresund) a huge bridge is being built. The Baltic Sea islands of Gotland and Öland are integral parts of Sweden. Norrland is on the map the dominating region of Sweden. Norrland - that is the northernmost two thirds of the country, where almost no people live. Except at the mines and along the coast. Northwestern Sweden is crossed by an ancient mountain chain; the remainder of the north is a southeast-sloping plateau that rises to between 200 and 500 meters.

SWEDISH GEOGRAPHY ....thanks to the rough guide to Sweden Sweden is the largest of the Scandinavian countries with an area twice that of Britain but a population of barely nine million, Sweden is still one of Europe's best kept secrets. Its cities are safe, carefree places where the cheap public transports runs on time and life is relaxed. Sweden's countryside boasts pine and birch forest as far as the eye can see, crystal-clear lakes perfect for a summer afternoon dip, not to mention possibly the purest air you'll ever breathe ; the country's south and west coasts feature some of the most exquisite beaches in Europe. Sweden is principally a land of forests andlakes. Its towns and cities are small by european standards and mostly to be found in the southern third of the country, where most Swedes live. Of the cities, serenely beautiful Stockholm Its wide three-lined boulevards, the narrow medieval streets of the Old Town and some modern state of the art buildings make Stockholm one of the most beautiful cities of Europe.
