Top Men's Swims Before 1990 1. John Bradshaw wins 100 Butterfly at NCAA Championships
John Bradshaw, class of 1989, won the 100 butterfly at the 1988 NCAA Championships at Emory University. This was the first NCAA Division III national championship for a CWRU male swimmer. His time was a then team record - 50.59. Of great significance was John's leadership bringing the team to national prominence and its first of many top twenty national finishes. 2. Bradshaw Defends His Title
John Bradshaw successfully defended his national title in the 100 butterfly in 50.50 the following year at Bowdoin College in Maine. It was an extremely exciting race with an all star field. The championship heat featured a flier who would earn the NCAA swimmer of the year award the following season and a newcomer who would later graduate as the NCAA record holder in the 100 fly. But the real aggressors were three seniors who chased John up and down the pool for the second year in a row. He moved from 4th at the 25 to 2nd at the 50 and secured a .25 victory with a perfect finish. Top Women's Swims Before 1990 1. Lisa Bernard Wins 1650 at First Women's NCAA Championships

Annette Kellerman attracted national attention at the New York Hippodrome as the first underwater ballerina by performing water ballet.
Kay Curtis instituted synchronized swimming as an integral part of the University of Wisconsin’s physical education program.
The first-known synchronized swimming competition in the United States was a dual meet between Wright Junior College and the Chicago Teacher's College held May 27, 1939, at Wright Junior College in Iowa.
Eleanor Holm, 1936 Olympian, performed at the World's Fair in New York, popularizing synchronized swimming nationwide.
Esther Williams, U.S. 100-meter freestyle champion and Olympic contender, was credited for popularizing synchronized swimming in the United States through her performances at the World's Fair in San Francisco and subsequent MGM movies.
The AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) adopted synchronized swimming as an official competitive sport for duet and team events. The first Synchronized Swimming Championship was held March 1, 1940, in Willamette, Ill. Because of World War II, no national events were held again until 1946.
The first AAU Senior National Synchronized Swimming Championship was held August 11, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., with only the team event. The duet event was held September 8, 1946 in Hinsdale, Ill.

    Hurricane History
    In The Beginning: 1994-95
This team was quite literally started overnight in September of 1994. With a list of six swimmers and lots of phone numbers, Paul Rowe and Carol Restrepo decided to seize the opportunity granted by Haddonwood owner, Tony Zanin, to start a new kind of swim team. "Every swimmer, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to grow and succeed in a small and nurturing, but challenging environment." Every swimmer has the right to excel in his/her swimming at their own level, and a coach whose goal for each swimmer is 'Be the Best YOU can be' in the pool, and in your everyday life! Now all Carol and Paul needed was followers to this new philosophy in the South Jersey swimming world. To their surprise and amazement, their Hurricane program has grown to be a very much respected team in the area!! The first practice in September, 1994 was attended by 29 swimmers! After only one weekend of nearly begging former Voyagers and friends to be the charter members, word spread, interest exploded, and the first practice launched the growth of a new swim team!! By our first year's end the team had swelled to 81 swimmers.
    The Second Year: 1995-96
The Hurricane Swim Team was now actually getting respect!!! But there was on little problem - at the end of the second year, Paul and Carol were looking for a new home for this new, rising swim team! It seemed that Wal-Mart was buying OUR POOL and OUR HOME!! Now what? Carol started the endless phone calls and meeting with area pool representatives basically begging for pool time. She and Paul wanted this team to continue, but the team needed a pool!

Roberson swim team began in 1985-86 as one of the first high school teams in Western North Carolina. The team also produced one state champion in its early years. -Currently the Ram swim team is under the tutelage of of Coaches Mike Rochelle and Bob Browning. After several down years, the two have rebuilt the once mighty program to produce county championship teams (Girls 2000-01), one Regional Champion, and a top 10 ranking in the state. Over the past 3 years Rochelle and Browning have sent 3 swimmers on to collegiate careers and hope to produce more in the coming years. It is their goal that T.C. The early years of McGill Swimming
The story of McGill Swimming is one of great distinction. The Men’s swimming program was included in the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union program for the first time in 1909. The first six years of competition saw McGill win championships each year, and 1930 saw the start of a five year reign for the swimming team. McGill regained the swimming crown in 1949 at Toronto in the most decisive win ever registered in the C.I.A.U., winning every event but diving. Queen’s dropped out of the circuit that year. 1950 saw a dual meet between McGill and Toronto in which McGill won, once again. In 1972, the Men’s team was the last team from Quebec to win a C.I.A.U swimming title in 1972 with Dave Johnson (Head Coach - National team ‘96) as team captain.
The McGill Women’s Swimming team originated in 1940, after previous attempts at starting one had failed. Until 1945, all intercollegiate meets were telegraphic, but after the war traveling meets were inaugurated. Toronto was host to the first meet in 1945. Since the start of these meets, there has been a continual battle between Toronto and McGill for the crown. McGill has taken the championship eight times and tied for it once in 1947. In 1950, McGill, in a thrilling battle, won by only one point over their rivals. At that time, only five universities, McMaster, Queen’s, Western, Toronto and McGill sent teams to the meet. Coach Gladys Bean is the one responsible for building up these teams. She started the team in her undergraduate years (the 40’s) and continued coaching until 1962. With her time and effort McGill became the dominant force on the swimming scene.
