Synchronized Swimming
Table of Contents The great Australian swimmer, Annette Kellerman, planted the first seed of what was to become synchronized swimming when she performed "water ballet" in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome in 1907. Katherine "Kay" Curtis didn't see the performance, but she may well have been inspired by newspaper accounts. As a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1915, Curtis began experimenting with underwater swimming stunts. The following year, she was instrumental in having synchronized swimming added to the school's physical education program for women. Curtis moved on to the University of Chicago, where she founded a water ballet club in 1923. Sixty of her swimmers, known as the "Modern Mermaids," performed at the 1934 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, attracting national and international publicity. The sport quickly became popular among young women in the Chicago area and Curtis developed rules for competition, based essentially on the scoring methods used in gymnastics, diving, and figure skating. The first recorded competition was held May 27, 1939, between Chicago Teacher's College, coached by Curtis, and Wright Junior College, also in Chicago.

Swimming
The first modern Olympic swimming contests were held outdoor in open water. The weather had turned unusually cold at the Bay of Zea at Phaleron, near Piraeus, and on the morning of the competition the temperature in the water had dropped to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Centigrade). Unlike early competitions, which were held in lakes, rivers and the open sea, all events are now held in Olympic-size pools, where the water temperature is kept between 78 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The events are categorized by the type of stroke the swimmer uses.
"Freestyle" is where the competitor may swim any stroke he or she prefers, usually the Australian crawl, where the arms alternately come out of the water and the legs flutter kick.

First-Ever Mutual of Omaha’s Duel in the Pool to Settle Rivalry Between Powerhouse U.S. and Australian Swim Teams Omaha, NE (August 7, 2002) - Mutual of Omaha today signed on as title sponsor of the first-ever Duel in the Pool, a head-to-head competition that will settle the biggest rivalry in Olympic sports and answer the question: Does the USA or Australia have the No. 1 swim team in the world.
Sponsorship of Mutual of Omaha’s Duel in the Pool is the latest announcement in Mutual of Omaha’s brand revitalization effort, which includes new national advertising, the rebirth of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom on Animal Plant and sponsorship of USA Swimming.
Mutual of Omaha’s Duel in the Pool will pit the best swimmers from the United States and Australia in a winner-take-all meet on April 6 in Indianapolis. The meet, which is being organized by USA Swimming, will build on the intense competition that highlighted the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, where swims by Australia’s Ian “The Torpedo” Thorpe and Susie O’Neill and the USA’s Lenny Krayzelberg and Misty Hyman captivated the world.
“As an ongoing sponsor of USA Swimming, Mutual of Omaha is proud to help bring these two teams together in what promises to be a thrilling competition for bragging rights as the world best swim team in the world,” said John Hildenbiddle, senior vice president-brand management at Mutual of Omaha. “Mutual of Omaha’s Duel in the Pool will help build awareness and enthusiasm for swimming that will carry over into the 2004 Olympics in Athens.”
