U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials: Davis native Knapp hopes to cook up a trip to Sydney
By Karl Grubaugh
Special to the Bee
(Published Aug. 8, 2000) Davis native Denali Knapp puts a new spin on an old clich when it starts to heat up, she runs to the kitchen. Knapp is one of the most successful swimmers to come out of the Sacramento area since the 1960s and '70s, when the late Sherm Chavoor, the coach at Arden Hills Swim Club, was consistently churning out Olympic medalists. Among her accomplishments, Knapp twice broke the American high school record in the 100-yard backstroke during her career at Davis High School, and she swam four years at the University of Arizona and was an NCAA finalist every year. And last summer, in what turned out to be her coming-out party on the international stage, she set a Pan American Games record of 2 minutes, 12.48 seconds in winning the 200-meter backstroke, finished second in the Pan Am 100 backstroke and ended the year ranked second in the United States and eighth in the world in both events.

Olympics Fun Facts
  • The early Olympic Games were celebrated as a religious festival from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D., when the games were banned for being a pagan festival (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). In 1894, a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, proposed a revival of the ancient tradition, and thus the modern-day Olympic Summer Games were born. Host Greece won the most medals (47) at the first Olympic Summer Games in 1896 The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Norway has won the most medals (239) at the Winter Games. The United States has won more medals (2,019) at the Summer Games than any other country. every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Up until 1986 the Olympics were held every four years. Since then, the Winter and Summer games have alternated every two years. The first Olympics covered by U.S. television was the 1960 Summer Games in Rome by CBS. No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever hosted a Winter Games.

In January, the City of Pompano Beach Commission voted to work with ISHOF and six U.S. Olympic sports to become a part of the community’s beach redevelopment. By moving to Pompano Beach, ISHOF becomes a boost to the City’s tourism and improves the economic health of the city; provides facilities that meet international standards; hosts events at the facilities; and insures accomplishing ISHOF’s missions. Sam Freas, president of ISHOF said, “This wonderful Pompano Beach opportunity will provide a new $36 million facility that includes the museum, library, one-of-a-kind aquatic complex and auditorium and a $15 million endowment. This is our dream for the ISHOF of the future.” Following nearly a year of thorough analysis and review, the board of directors of the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) has concluded that ISHOF should relocate.

Women-only event was an exhibition sport from 1948 to 1968. Debuted as a full medal sport at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Judging of technical routine and free routine is similar to figure skating. The United States and Canada won every gold and silver medal in the first four Olympic competitions, but their leading swimmers retired after Atlanta. Russia and Japan emerged as the new leaders at the world championships two years ago. The finer points
Format: Swimmers have to hold their breaths for long periods, with up to 60 percent of their routine performed underwater. Synchronized swimming consists of technical and free routine competitions, accounting for 35 percent and 65 percent of the final score, respectively. For the technical portion, swimmers perform specified moves, which include twirls, thrusts, boosts and rockets, without touching the bottom of the pool. Judges look for height, synchronization and degree of difficulty. Equipment: Nose guards to keep out water, gel to keep hair in place and underwater speakers to hear the music.
