Culture in the Neighbourhood Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) - Geneva (Switzerland) The Culture in the Neighbourhood Dassagho Association was created in January, 1998 to develop and implement neighbourhood projects. This Association comprises 600 members, all inhabitants of the neighbourhood. The "Théâtre de la Fraternité" of Ouagadougou was hosted in Geneva at the neighbourhood house of La Jonction. On July 3 and 4, 1998, this theatre group staged the play "The Visit of the Old Lady" in French. This play was written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, a Swiss German and directed by Jean-Pierre Guingané of Burkina Faso. The Dassagho Dodo group was revived so that people today are still able to witness and appreciate this cultural practice involving masked dancers, singers and musicians performing a traditional ritual to pay tribute to the ancestors.

Services Executive Board Facts and Figures Branches ... Bank Details Geneva, which is known as the "smallest of the large metropolises", is a cultural paradise. This city on the Rhone River is home to the Grand Théâtre on the Place Neuve, one of the most famous lyrical theaters in Europe. Between September and July, the regular programme of performances is expanded to include operas and ballets. The Nouveau Théâtre de Poche and the Théâtre de la Comédie also enjoy wide renown, and any music-lover who thinks of Geneva automatically thinks of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. A wide variety of events, such as the Fête de la Musique, Fureur de lire or the Journées du Patrimoine make Geneva a top destination for lovers of music and culture each year. During the summer months, jazz festivals and open-air concerts provide more lively entertainment, perfectly complementing the cultural diversity the city offers.

Services Executive Board Facts and Figures Branches ... Bank Details With its mild climate and greater-than-average share of sunshine per year, Lugano and the region surrounding it is the obvious choice for festivals and open-air events. The Locarno Film Festival is the most famous of these festivals and is renowned the world over. The Lugano Festival, which takes place between April and June, is a must for music lovers. Each year the Festival is dedicated to the works of a different composer. The exhibitions in the Villa Ciani (Museo Civico di Belle Arti) provide a good cross-section of European and Swiss artworks from the 15th to 20th centuries. Contemporary works can be found in the Villa Malpensata. Be sure to visit Pinacoteca, once home to Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, where selected works from famous European painters and sculptors are on show.

MIT Club of Switzerland invited its members to a tour of the Culture and Congress Center in Lucerne
on Saturday, October 28, 2000
(Members received a sign-up sheet in our September 2000 mailing.) The recently-completed Culture and Congress Center in Lucerne is a unique and modern public building, built on the threshold between a city and its lake. It is a unique joint project where the clients were the people of Lucerne and where the main designers came from abroad (architect Jean Nouvel from Paris and acoustical engineer Russell Johnson from New York). Built in two phases between 1995 and 2000, the facility contains a 1900-seat concert hall, a 300-seat congress hall, a museum, and restaurants. The architecture is bold and inventive, and the acoustics of the concert hall are outstanding. This event was open to Club members, visiting MIT alumni, and their accompanying family and friends.
