Synchronized duet swimmers Alison Barostik, front, and Anna Kozlova won the preliminaries Friday at the 2003 U.S. Olympic trials
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING: Barostik, Kozlova take lead at Olympic Trials Matt Gashck; For The News Tribune
The first day of the 2003 Olympic Trials for synchronized swimming duets went just as expected for the six teams competing for a spot in the 2004 Olympics. Alison Barostik and Anna Kozlova took the lead after the first day of competition and put themselves in great position for that one spot. But right on their trail are Sara Lowe and Stephanie Nesbitt, who are in second place despite being paired in their first competition in over four months. Nesbitt and Lowe, the only unaffiliated team of the six pairs competing at Weyerhaueser-King County Aquatic Center, started swimming together in June and were instantly successful, despite living over 400 miles apart - Nesbitt, from Riverside, Calif., and Lowe, from Sunnyvale, Calif. "When we were about 12 our parents both said that we should be swimming together because we were always finishing first and second," said Lowe, 18.

And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.
