The Geography of Syria
Syria is an Arab country located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Syrian coastline is 183 km long. The country is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the South and Lebanon and Palestine to the west. Syria extends from 32º19'N to 37º30'N and from 35º43'E to 42º25'E. The total land area is about 185,000 km². Syria contains numerous mountain ranges, especially in its' western parts. Some of these are the coastal mountains, the Anti-Lebanese chain, the Kalamon, Al-Zawieh, Al-Kord and Sema'an. In addition to these western ranges, some of the more important internal mountains are the Palmyran (Tadmourieh) chain, Jabal Al-Arab and Jabal Abdul Aziz. The Euphrates is the longest river in Syria, covering a distance of 680 km as it passes through its land. The Euphrates' two main tributaries are the Khabour and Bleekh. The Orontes (Al-Assi) river flows from Lebanon into Syria and extends in Syrian territory for a distance of 366 km. In the Damascus basin, Barada and Al-A'awaj grace this ancient oasis. The Yarmouk is located in the southernmost part of the country while Ifreen runs in the north. The coastal region is dotted with numerous small rivers, the three most important of which are Al-Kabir Al-Shimali, Al-Kabir Al Janoubi and Al-Sen. Syria contains many lakes, some are natural like Kettine, Mzayreeb, Jabboul, Jayroud, Al-Mouh and Al-Bawara. Others are man-made like Al-Assad lake on the Euphrates dam and 16 November on Al-Kabir Al-Shimali.

In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Syria lost the Golan Heights to Israel. Since 1976, Syrian troops have been stationed in Lebanon, ostensibly in a peacekeeping capacity. In recent years, Syria and Israel have held occasional peace talks over the return of the Golan Heights. http://www.fedcommsyr.org/aboutsyria-r.html
Geography: The Syrian Arab Republic is located in the Middle East at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea.
It is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and south-east, Jordan to the south, and Lebanon to the south-east. The capital of Syria is Damascus; other large cities are Aleppo, Lattakia, Homs, and Deir Ez-Zor.
Syria covers an area more than 185,000 square kilometers; its terrain, climate and vegetation are diverse. Mountains dominate the western and south-western regions and separate the narrow coastal plain form the interior. The highest mountain range straddles the boundary with Lebanon and is high enough to get heavy snow in winter; most of the remainder of Syria to the east of these mountains is a plateau. The coastal plain has warm, humid summers and mild, wet winters and gets enough rain for crops to be grown without irrigation. The interior, by contrast, has cold winters, especially in the north, and extremely hot summers, particularly in the east. Much of the interior is desert, or semi-desert. The two major rivers, the Euphrates and Orients, originate in Turkey and Lebanon.
