What is Taekwondo?
Since the establishment of the ancient Korean state in 2332 B.C., the Korean people have had to fight to protect their independence from the Chinese, the Mongols, and the Japanese. Like other fighting peoples, they developed a systematic art of self-defense. The earliest known name of this martial art was Soo Bak, meaning "Punching and Butting." In 1909, Japan conquered the weakened Korea and began an occupation of the land that lasted until the end of World War II. During the Japanese occupation, they strictly banned all forms of martial arts on pain of death. Practitioners of Tae Kyon taught in secret to keep the art alive. After the Japanese occupation ended in 1945, exiled Koreans returned with other forms of martial arts they had studied elsewhere. Some of these were combined with the ancient art of Tae Kyon. In 1955, the name Taekwondo (sometimes spelled "Tae Kwon Do") was given to the martial art that emerged—"Tae" for a kick or strike with the foot, "Kwon" for a punch or strike with the fist, and "Do" for the "way of." Thus the name signifies "The way of striking with hand and foot." In 1973, the Korean Taekwondo Association (KTA) formed the

Taekwondo is a martial art independently developed over 20 centuries ago in Korea. Over the many years it has become a popular international sport. The main feature of Taekwondo is that it is a free-fighting combat sport using the bare hands and feet to repel the opponent. Taekwondo literally means the way of kicking and punching . It consists of sharp strong angular movements with free flowing circular movements to produce a balance of beauty and power. With the addition of Taekwondo's trademark kicking techniques it is a complete system of self defense and personal improvement. All of its activities are based on the defensive attitude that originally developed for protection against enemy attacks. The most important fact about Taekwondo is that it is not only a superior art of self-defense, but of the mind as well. It gives its practitioners self-confidence that provides an advantage over weaker opponents. This mental characteristic along with the physical ability is beneficial to the mental life of individuals as well as to their families and friends. With its practical means of self defense, its complete regiment of physical conditioning, and its aid to improved concentration and mental performance, Taekwondo offers a total fitness program integrating mind, body, and spirit. Today Taekwondo is the most recognized Korean Martial Art. Taekwondo first came to be recognized as a system of self-defense in the 1950's when a group of leading Korean martial artists came together and unified their various art forms under a single style of hand and feet fighting. They named their style Taekwondo, and in the last 30 years have developed it into one of the most effective styles of unarmed self-defense in the world today. The popularity for Taekwondo is not only here in the U.S, but internationally as well. Its evolution and development as an international amateur sport have grown quickly.

HISTORY OF TAEKWONDO History of Taekwondo
The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of korean martial arts are known as 'Taek Kyon'. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms: Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.)
Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.)
Silla (57 B.C. - 936 A.D.) Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 668 A.D. and Koguryo in 670 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwondo. What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music. It was in 936 A.D. when Wang Kon founded the Koryo dynasty, an abbreviation of Koguryo. The name Korea is derived from Koryo.

THE HISTORY OF TAEKWONDO By Glen R. Morris
A Report for Recommendation Black Belt Testing 1994
Before I get into the history of Taekwondo, I would like to define what it means. I read the definition from many books and the one that I like best comes from the book Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts written by Donn F. Draeger and Robert W. Smith. "Taekwondo is an empty-hand combat form that entails the use of the whole body. Tae means "to Kick" or "Smash with the feet," Kwon implies "punching" or "destroying with the hand or fist," and Do means "way" or "method." Taekwondo thus, is the technique of unarmed combat for self defense that involves the skillful application of techniques that include punching, jumping kicks, blocks, dodges, parrying actions with hands and feet. It is more than a mere physical fighting skill, representing as it does a way of thinking and a pattern of life requiring strict discipline. It is a system of training both the mind and the body in which great emphasis is placed on the development of the trainee's moral character." Taekwondo is a martial art that in "todays" form of self defense has evolved by combining many different styles of martial arts that existed in Korea over the last 2,000 years and some martial arts styles from countries that surround Korea. Taekwondo incorporates the abrupt linear movements of Karate and the flowing, circular patterns of Kung-fu with native kicking techniques. Over fifty typically Chinese circular hand movements can be identified in modern Taekwondo.

What is Taekwondo?
Although the name "Taekwondo" is only about 40 years old, the martial art itself traces its origins in Korean history as far back as 57 B.C. "Tae" means to kick, "Kwon" means to strike with the hand, and "Do" means a philosophical way of life. The main feature of Taekwondo is that it is a free-fighting combat sport using bare hands and feet to repel an opponent. The Taekwondo training regimen affects the individual wholly and involves more than just physical coordination and technique. Physical requirements such as flexibility, strength, stamina, speed, and balance are essential to Taekwondo and can only be gained through diligent practice. The training is composed of Poomse (basic forms), Kyorugi (sparring), and Kyukpa (breaking). Taekwondo requires great mental concentration and produces almost incredible power. Before the advent of protective gear, it was impossible to exercise the developed power against men except at the risk of inflicting serious injury or death. Therefore, a method was sought to test such formidable power against non-living things like wood planks, roof tiles, or bricks. We must realize that anyone can properly develop and control this latent power.

Background History of Taekwondo
Modern Taekwondo is actually derived from the long experience of ancient people in defending themselves against attacks of animals and enemies. As time passed, people picked up and developed more effective skills of their own in the use of their hands and legs in fighting, hence developing the primitive form of TaeKyon - an old name of Taekwondo.
Traditional Taekwondo
TaeKyon was practiced as early as 50 BC Korea, during this time, Korea was divided into three main kingdoms: Silla, Koguryo and Baekche. Paintings on the ceiling of the Muyong-chong, a royal tomb from the Koguryo dynasty, show that TaeKyon practitioners using techniques virtually identical to modern-day Taekwondo.
The Hwarang were a special warrior class, trained in a military academy initially founded for the young nobility of Silla, the society of the Hwarang-do ("the way of flowering manhood"). The academy adopted TaeKyon as part of its regular training program. Hwarang warriors were well-educated young men who were encouraged to travel far and wide in Korea to learn about the regions and the people; TaeKyon was thus spread to all parts of the country during the Silla dynasty, which lasted from AD 668 to AD 935. TaeKyon during that period of time, was designed primarily to promote fitness, and it was until the Koryo dynasty (935 - 1392), that the art was taught as a style of fighting.

A Traditional History of Taekwondo About 1,300 years ago, the various tribes in what we now know as Korea were lived in three kingdoms: Koguryo, Paekchae, and Silla. These three kingdoms were constantly at war with each other. At this time, Koreans in all three kingdoms practiced a fighting method called Soo Bak for self-defense. In Silla, Soo Bak practice eventually began to evolve into something more than just a "fighting method." Silla was located on the southeast corner of the Korean Peninsula. It was the smallest of the three kingdoms and therefore faced grave threats not only from its two larger Korean neighbors, but from Japan as well. During the seventh century AD, the 24th king of Silla, Chin Huang, organized an elite group of his officers into a specialized fighting corps. This group was made up of aristocratic youth and was called the "Hwa Rang Do," which means "the Way of the Flowering Youth," in Korean. The Hwa Rang Do was designed to develop both fighting methods and spirit for the defense of Silla. The Hwa Rang Do In addition to ordinary training in spear, bow, sword, and hook fighting techniques, the Hwa Rang Do also trained in physical and mental disciplines and various methods of hand and foot fighting. To harden their bodies, they climbed rugged mountains, swam turbulent rivers in the coldest winter months, and drove themselves unmercifully to prepare for the task of defending their homeland. To guide themselves spiritually, they developed a five point code of conduct:
