    Olympic History: Swimming
There is no exact date for when swimming was invented, but there is evidence dating the sport back for centuries. Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Beginning a program should be evaluated with the same care and approach as looking for a private school or college. The prospective student must evaluate the credentials and experience of the instructors, the quality of instruction and the facility, the schools reputation in the community, and most importantly, the thoughts and comments of parents and students already enrolled in the program.
At DEES Taekwondo you will find that we offer the best and most qualified instructor group in the Dayton area, a well designed, functional and conveniently located studio, and a very welcome family atmosphere. We love what we do and it shows in our teaching methodology and our relationships with our students and their parents.
We hope that you will take time to visit our facility, watch or take part in our programs, and experience the difference.

  • Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 668 A.D. and Koguryo in 670 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwondo. What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music. It was in 936 A.D. when Wang Kon founded the Koryo dynasty, an abbreviation of Koguryo. The name Korea is derived from Koryo.

    Olympic History: Basketball
Founded in the United States in 1891, basketball didn't get its international roots until 1932, when the International Basketball Federation was formed. Shortly after, the federation gained recognition from the International Olympic Committee and the sport made its Olympic debut in the 1936 Games in Berlin. Since that time, the U.S. has dominated the sport, winning 11 of 14 gold medals. In 1992, the U.S. captivated the world when it introduced its "Dream Team," consisting of NBA stars who easily swept through the competition to the gold. The U.S. women have also dominated Olympic competition, taking three of six gold medals since the women's event was added.

Elsewhere on the Web Sydney Morning Herald: Taekwondo Controversy Another Olympic Judging Scandal The world is still reeling from the aftermath of the biggest judging scandal in Olympic historyan alleged vote-swapping deal in figure skating. Now new information suggests another judging scandal may have taken place in taekwondo. In the figure skating case, Canadian skaters Jaime Sale and David Pelletier skated a near-perfect program, but came in second to Russian skaters Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. After a worldwide outcry and official protest, Sale & Pelletier were also awarded gold medals. Months later, the investigation uncovered links to the Russian mob, an "influenced" French judge, and a world of disappointed fans.

    Olympic History: Table Tennis
March 23, 2000 The history of table tennis is something of a mystery. While no one can debate its popularity, the date of its founding is uncertain. The sport, which most believe originated in England as an after-dinner amusement in the 1800s, attracts more than 40 million competitive players worldwide and many millions more who play for recreation. Formerly known as Gossima, Flim-Flam, Whif-Whaf and Ping-Pong, table tennis reached the height of its popularity in the early 20th century, but faded from the foreground until making a strong comeback in the 1920s. Table tennis has been an Olympic sport since 1988.
