(in Opinion) Titan Games To Welcome Elite Taekwondo Athletes to Bay Area
Special to AsianWeek The U.S. taekwondo team will certainly be put to the test as they face talented teams from Korea and Japan in this triangular meet. The Korean team has long been considered the number one team in the world. For Olympic featherweight Jason Han, from Monterey Park, Calif., the Titan Games will be a homecoming to the Bay Area. Han graduated from UC Berkeley in December with a degree in integrated biology. A member of the UC Berkeley taekwondo team throughout his collegiate career, Han represented the United States on the national collegiate taekwondo team in 1998 and 2000. In 2000 he won a silver medal at the World University Taekwondo Championships. He has been on the U.S. national taekwondo team for four consecutive years. The U.S. taekwondo team will take the mat against Japan on Friday Feb. 14. Team USA will face Korea, the number one ranked team in the world, the following night.

International Groups [ Road to Olympics ] Tradition versus Sport TKD in the U.S. Taekwondo Today History References In 1974, instructors in the United States, such as Ken Min Dong Ja Yang Mu Yong Lee , and others, worked for and attained the admission of Taekwondo into the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The newly established WTF technical standards were adopted by the AAU Taekwondo group. On October 5, 1975, Taekwondo became an affiliate of the General Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF), an association of all international sports, both Olympic and non-Olympic, with direct ties to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). On April 9, 1976, the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) adopted Taekwondo as an official sport event. In 1979, the WTF President, Kim Un Yong , was elected chairperson of the World Federation of Non-Olympic Sports. Under the auspices of GAISF, Taekwondo was introduced to the IOC as a sport. On July 17, 1980, the WTF was granted recognition by the IOC at its 83rd General Session during the Moscow Olympics. On July 24, 1981, Taekwondo was one of the primary events in the World Games (non-Olympic events) held in Santa Clara, California. On November 28, 1981, the United States AAU Taekwondo group changed its name to the National AAU Taekwondo Union of the Unites States. On February 5, 1982, Taekwondo was adopted as a demonstration sport for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games at the IOC Executive Board Meeting. The crowning achievement of Taekwondo as a sport came at the General Session of the IOC held in Berlin in May 1982 when Taekwondo was designated an official demonstration sport for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, and for the 25th Barcelona, Spain, Olympics, in 1992.

Women's judo was added in 1992. The men's competition began in 1964 in Tokyo. Germany, Belgium and France lead in the men's field. Cuba tops the women's field. The finer points
Equipment: Contestants wear a judogi, which is loose fitting pants and a jacket tied by a black belt. They compete on a mat that is 32.8 feet square. Rules: Bouts last five minutes for men and four for women. A match can be one by a single point, which may be scored if one contestant throws his or her opponent to the mat so that the opponent's back strikes the canvas. If the throw is executed with perfect form, a point is awarded, and the match is over. If the form is not perfect, half a point may be awarded; another half can be gained by holding the opponent on the mat 20 seconds. Thirty seconds of holding is worth a full point as well. If no point is scored in the time allotted, the match goes to the person who has either a half point or who has accumulated the most credit. Bronze medals are awarded to each semifinal loser. Point system annoys some in Olympic debut
    Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia The last impression the people running taekwondo want its Olympic debut to leave is that it's just too Korean for the rest of the world to ever really break into. Jae-Eun Jung of Korea, left, in action against Hieu Ngan Tran of Vietnam women's 57 kg final. Tran won the silver, which gave her country its first Olympic medal ever. But while the World Taekwondo Federation took pains to keep that from happening, they weren't able to escape a little controversy. And perhaps a bit of sour grapes. To make sure the nation that created taekwondo the "way of the hand and foot" didn't completely dominate the medals, each country except host Australia was limited to only four athletes in the Sydney Games, where eight golds were contested. As a result, the breadth of the competition was better than most would have thought. Nearly 50 nations, from Austria to Venezuela, entered. In addition to South Korea, Cuba, Australia, the United States, China and Greece all go home with golds. Taekwondo even provided Vietnam with its first-ever Olympic medal a silver for Tran Hieu Ngan in the women's 57-kilogram class.

  • By Pamela Rice Hahn
It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.
