Described as a balance of beauty and power, devotees of the sport stress its mental side - it is a technique of mental discipline designed to give its practitioners the confidence to overcome weaker opponents. Taekwondo, according to its authorities, stresses a balanced approached to life intertwining training, family and social responsibility and responsibility towards one’s work or education. The mental and moral aspects of the sport are regarded as highly as the physical. Mentally, Taekwondo is said to teach its participants perseverance, self-discipline, self-confidence and self control.

Elsewhere on the Web Sydney Morning Herald: Taekwondo Controversy Another Olympic Judging Scandal The world is still reeling from the aftermath of the biggest judging scandal in Olympic historyan alleged vote-swapping deal in figure skating. Now new information suggests another judging scandal may have taken place in taekwondo. In the figure skating case, Canadian skaters Jaime Sale and David Pelletier skated a near-perfect program, but came in second to Russian skaters Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. After a worldwide outcry and official protest, Sale & Pelletier were also awarded gold medals. Months later, the investigation uncovered links to the Russian mob, an "influenced" French judge, and a world of disappointed fans.

    http://www.usolympicteam.com/sports2/ta/az_over.html
Taekwondo was first introduced into the U.S. in the 1950s. From this time until 1973 there was a broad diversity of teaching methodologies and styles, which were brought from the six major Kwan (schools) of Taekwondo in Korea. With unification initiated by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) under the leadership of Dr. Un Yong Kim, instructors in the U.S. organized and made possible the admission of Taekwondo into the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in 1974. Under this organization, all newly established technical standards, sanctioned by the WTF, were adopted into this official form of Taekwondo in the United States. Its name was changed to the National AAU Taekwondo Union on September 9, 1984. On April 7, 1984, during the House of Delegates Meeting of the U.S. Olympic Committee, the U.S. Taekwondo Union was unanimously approved as a "Group A" member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. U.S. Taekwondo Union is a non-profit amateur sports organization that exists to develop Taekwondo in the U.S. It is the National Governing Body for Taekwondo, as well as the sole representative of the WTF in the United States. The U.S. Taekwondo Union is responsible for development and competitive programs. It sanctions U.S. tournaments and meets, administers national championships and reports to the World Taekwondo Federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee as a National Governing Body for Taekwondo in the U.S. Because of its leadership, it is fast becoming one of the largest athletic associations in the U.S. Its success is evident in the growing popularity Taekwondo has experienced in the past several years. The 1991 U.S. Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships in Cincinnati attracted a crowd of over 10,000 people.

Here they are, the official Results of the Olympic Games Taekwondo Championships 24th Olympic Games 1988 Seoul, Korea 25th Olympic Games 1992 Barcelona, Spain 27th Olympic Games 2000 Sydney, Australia Taekwondo became an Olympic Sport on July 17th 1980 at the 83rd General Session of IOC in Moscow. Despite this it lasted two decades until Taekwondo made the step into the official program of the Olympic Games - this will happen in Sydney 2000. Nevertheless, Taekwondo has been adopted two times as a demonstration sport at Olympic Games: 1988 in Seoul/Korea and 1992 in Barcelona/Spain. This is a kind of test for future to-be-olympic sports, and normally this chance is given only one time to a candidate. The fact that Taekwondo had to pass this test for two times shows how hard it is now to take the last step into the official olympic program. Being a demonstration sport at the Olympic Games means, that there will be held competition inside the normal olympic program, even the medals are the same, but some restrictions apply. For instance, there was some fighting about the official marching-in ceremony and of course the medals for Taekwondo do not show up in the official medal ranking of the Games. Anyway, for the participating Taekwondo-competitors in Seoul and Barcelona it was a unforgettable memory, staying together with the world's best athletes in the Olympic Village and being a part of the largest sports event in the world. This experience will even be topped in Sydney 2000, when they will compete for real Olympic gold.

PHILOSOPHY - A WAY OF LIFE:
Martial arts is not just a hobby, but a way of life. The purpose of martial arts is to enable the individual to achieve his full potential mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. At Master Choi's Oriental Martial Arts College, this is the philosophy we maintain.
MARTIAL ARTS - TAEKWONDO, MOOGONGRYU - KIMOODO (Healing ARTS):
Primitive Stage (6,000 yrs., Survival) - Ancient Stage (2,000 yrs. War and Battle skill) - Modern (21st century - Street self defense and Olympic Sports) - Future (Holistic Life Style and Skill) The martial arts were first developed as means of survival for human beings. They evolved into highly effective military skills. Today, martial arts training teaches holistic living habits and skills. Taekwondo is an ancient Korean martial art which continuously developed throughout 6,000 years of Korean history. Modern Taekwondo was organized and practiced by Koreans approximately 2,000 years ago. Throughout the centuries, Taekwondo has evolved to the dynamic kicking art that we know today. Since late 1950's in less than 50 years it has also evolved into one of the most popular of the martial arts in the world with over 50 million practitioners in over 150 countries (5 million in U.S.). With phenomenal growth and its popularity, and hard work of Taekwondo masters, instructors, organizational leaders and supporters, Taekwondo was introduced into the Olympic 1988 and 1992 as a demonstration sport and accepted as an official Olympic sport for the year 2,000 at Sydney, Australia.
