http://www.umid.uz/Main/Uzbekistan/Geography/geography.html
General Information Uzbekistan has an area slightly larger than that state of California, and is one of two countries in the world that has the dubious honor of being doubly landlocked. (Goods must pass through two other countries to reach a port, the only other country which shares this trait is Liechtenstein.) Traditionally the economic, political, and distribution hub of Soviet Central Asia, Uzbekistan borders Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The majority of Uzbekistan is desert steppe broken by fertile oases along the banks of two great rivers, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Uzbekistan has dry winters and no more than eight inches of rainfall per year, but its hot, dry summers extending from May to October, and water for irrigation produce excellent growing conditions for crops such as cotton, tobacco, fruits, and vegetables. The fertile Ferghana Valley boasts 6 million people, including large minorities of ethnic Kyrgyz, Tajiks, and Russians. The Ferghana Valley is split between three countries: Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and is home to a very diverse ethnic mix. The Ferghana Valley produces a major share of the country's cotton and grain crops and contains numerous manufacturing plants, as well as natural gas and oil fields. Uzbekistan's central region consists mostly of desert, broken by the oases of the Zarafshan River, Qarshi Steppe, and Surkhandarya River. This region is best known for the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, which together claim more than 600,000 inhabitants and comprise the heart of Uzbekistan's tourism industry. Central Uzbekistan is also home to the mining center of Navoi and contains the majority of Uzbekistan's gold and other mineral deposits, as well as the largest natural gas and oil fields. Irrigation along the Zarafshan and other rivers provides a basis for agriculture.

A peace agreement among rival factions was signed in 1997, and implementation reportedly completed by late 1999. Part of the agreement required the legalization of opposition political parties prior to the 1999 elections, which occurred, but such parties have made little progress in successful participation in government. Random criminal and political violence in the country remains a complication impairing Tajikistan's ability to engage internationally. Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Tajikistan has experienced three changes in government and a civil war since it gained independence in 1991 when the USSR collapsed. A peace agreement among rival factions was signed in 1997, but implementation has progressed slowly. Nevertheless, a number of opposition political parties have been legalized and are participating in elections, suggesting that the country may be stabilizing politically. Russian-led peacekeeping troops are based throughout the country, and Russian-commanded border guards are stationed along the border with Afghanistan. Geography
Tajikistan is bordered by Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to the north, Afghanistan to the south and China to the east. 93% of the republic is occupied by mountains, most notably by the sparsely populated Pamir Mountains, which include Pik Kommunizma (7495m/24,590ft), the highest point of the former Soviet Union. The mountainous terrain means that in winter it is impossible to reach the east or the north of the country by road without taking a detour through Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. In the fertile plains of the south-west, cotton dominates the agriculture. In the north, the Khojand (formerly Leninabad) region, cotton and silk are the main crops

    http://www.bisnis.doc.gov/bisnis/country/9806tjo1.htm
Commercial Overview of Tajikistan: Part 1 - Basic Facts
June 1998 BASIC FACTS Geography: Population: 5.8 million: 65 percent Tajik; 25 percent Uzbek; 3 percent Russian (including Russian-speaking nationalities). The Slavic population of Tajikistan has declined by almost ten percent since the 1989 census. Approximately 70 percent of the population lives in rural areas, making Tajikistan the least urban of the former Soviet republics. Language: The official language of Tajikistan is Tajik, a dialect of Persian similar to Farsi and Dari. Approximately 36 percent of the population and most business persons and government officials speak Russian. The further one travels outside of Dushanbe and Khojand, the sharper the decline in those persons speaking Russian. In the countryside, particularly in Kurgan-Tyube and Leninabad, much of the rural population speaks Uzbek as well as Tajik. GDP: 1996 (est.) - $1.1 billion Exchange Rate: 750 Tajik rubles to $1 as of 4/98 by government exchange rate and 750 Tajik rubles by commercial excange rate. Political Developments: Tajikistan is a nation undergoing profound political and economic change. It is a newly independent nation still in the process of stabilizing its internal political situation as well as its relations with neighboring states. Although the 1992 civil war, which was caused by regional economic and political differences, largely subsided by March 1993, there continues to be sporadic fighting along the Tajik border with Afghanistan between remnants of the Tajik opposition and Russian border guard forces. Although the northern region of Leninabad, the site of the majority of Western business focus in Tajikistan, had been immune from the fighting, 1996 saw the first incidents of political demonstrations and protests in the region against the government.
