The European Wolf Spider
(Lycosa Tarantula)
(Click on picture to enlarge) The name tarantula comes from a real spider that is found in southern Italy, it lives mainly in an area around the town of Taranto. In fact the real tarantula ( The European Wolf Spider, Lycosa Tarantula ) is distantly related to the other spiders that share its name. The real tarantula is a small slightly hairy spider ( about 2 inches (5cm's) across ). It is not dangerous to humans!

Tarantulas I rear tarantulas to provide a travelling show for elementary school classes. I keep both arboreal and burrowing tarantulas. Arboreal tarantulas generally live above the ground, often in trees. They spin a retreat of dense, white silk, in which they spend most of their time. Burrowing tarantulas live below ground, in a tunnel-like system that they build by excavating dirt with their legs and mouthparts. 50. Theraphosidae (baboon Spiders)
Photographs of representative species, and a description of the characteristics of this spider family. The family includes the giant, hairy spiders commonly known as tarantulas.
http://www.museums.org.za/bio/spiderweb/therapho.htm
biodiversity explorer
Family: Theraphosidae (baboon spiders)
(Phylum: Arthropoda , subphylum Chelicerata, class Arachnida, order Araneae, suborder Mygalomorpha) Harpactira baviana (male) Harpactira chrysogaster (female) Harpactira atra (male) Ceratogyrus sp.(photo by Dr. M Filmer, used with permission) (for larger images click on the image) African species are called baboon spiders due to their hairy appearance and the black scopulae pads on its "feet" resembling the pads on baboon feet. These spiders are often incorrectly referred to as Tarantulas , a name usurped by the American species from the European wolf spider (family Lycosidae Lycosa tarantula This family belongs to the suborder Mygalomorpha. This is a primitive spider group that some scientists believe should belong to its own order as, for example, the scorpions. These harmless giants are often negatively portrayed as villainous monsters especially in movie industry. They are not dangerous to man although they can inflict a painful bite. They are all mildly venemous, the venom being neurotoxic. However, the smaller species from the Western Cape, Harpactirella lightfooti is reputed to be dangerous to man although there is no evidence of this.

Tracey's Tarantulas An introduction to the world of tarantula's.
General care, and photo's included. NEW! The care and opinions in these pages are my own. I am not an expert, just a hobbyist who wishes to share what I have learned. With over 800 species of Tarantula there are a lot of different spiders to choose from.
Some are not good pets for the beginner.
Both Poppy and Jerico are not beginner spiders, but they are a beautiful addition to any collection.
Males
Wanted Feeding Sexing This is Jerico, an Acanthoscurria geniculata. (Brazilian white knee.) This is Poppy, a Poecilotheria regalis. (Indian Ornamental) Moulting The following spiders are a mixture of temperament. Bella is large and not really a beginners pet, but Milly is a good starter spider. She is very reclusive, but many people have found them to be good pets.
Huyana is a young tree spider, most members of the Avicularia family should make a good first time pet, this one combines beauty with a gentle temperament, the urticating hairs are very effective though.
Teddy is a male Goliath and definately not for the beginner, his size alone is a challenge, and the fangs at that size could cause serious motor damage to a hand.
