Fall 1998 And Student Makes Three
Letting Students Lead Parent Conferences
by Laura Hayden
Laura Hayden is a seventh-grade communications teacher at Derby Middle School in Derby, Kansas.
A s I walk around my classroom, I hear students explaining to their parents the purpose of assignments, what they learned, and why they achieved the grades they did. Some students speak with pride; some express regret. As a middle school teacher, I'm thankful our school has made the transition to the student-led method of helping parents to learn how their child is performing in school. Student-led conferences are a refreshing change from the previous "herding" of parents through the school cafeteria, where they would wait in lines for a quick rundown of their child's grades. I often found it difficult to keep straight which parents came for which child. Our principal introduced the concept of student-led conferences last year and asked for volunteer teams to try it out. One seventh- and one eighth-grade team ran their conferences this way in the fall. Those teams then reported their results to the staff at an inservice, providing helpful suggestions and handouts. In the spring, most teams were willing to try student-led conferences, and our principal helped by offering advice and materials. My team found the experience both enjoyable and valuable to all parties.

"When we scheduled conferences, we sent a note home asking parents to tell us what they wanted to find out at the conference. For example: trouble with homework, social issues, note taking, test taking, making friends. We were then prepared to address parent concerns without being blind sided. " Before and During the Conference Paul, Intermediate Grade Teacher : Miami, Florida "Arrange for comfortable seating, with good ligthing and ventilation. Organize samples of the students' work and test results so that they are easily accessible and will complement the conference plan. Write down the topics you will discuss. While families are waiting to see you, give them folders of their children's work. Also, give them a newsletter with class poems, or students' works, and highlights of current events, etc. It makes waiting easier." Follow-up to Conferences Colleen, Middle School Teacher

Don't get me wrong … I was a good student, but I worried anyway. Would I get in trouble for passing notes in history class or forgetting my math homework? Years later, as I prepare for my own child's first parent-teacher conference, I realize it's much more nerve-wracking to be the parent than the kid. What if my child isn't doing as well as I hoped? According to Francine Ballan, principal of Greenacres School in Scarsdale, New York, the purpose of these conferences is for the teacher to meet with you on a regular basis to discuss how you can help your child do his or her very best in school. The teacher is not there to put you on the spot, but rather to make your child's school experience a positive one. Just as the teacher must prepare for the conference, so should you. Here are some ideas for how you can get the most out of your parent-teacher conferences this year.

Tips for Parent Conferences
Communicating with parents is one of the most important things we do as educators. When we can work together with a child's parents toward common goals, we improve the atmosphere for learning.
Most successful teacher-parent "teams" begin with a conference, usually one conducted before there's a real need to meet. Of course, while parent conferences can be most helpful, we also know that sometimes they can be a discouraging waste of time -or even turn into ugly confrontations. Here are some tips to help make all your parent conferences productive and successful:
Invite both parents.
Encourage both parents to attend conferences when possible. Misunderstandings are less common if both parents hear what you have to say, and you'll be able to gauge the kind of support both parents give the child. It is also critical to remember that both mother and father may not be available; that many children come from single-parent homes; or homes where grandparents are raising the children.

Email Address First Last Preschool 10 Tips for Successful Parent Conferences Joy P. Dodge One of the greatest challenges facing church leaders today is building a team that helps children become high achievers, whether in school or in Sunday School. Parents, children, teachers, and other church leaders must work together to bring spiritual growth and lay foundations that lead to professions of faith as well as spiritual maturity. Connecting with parents about their children can be a real challenge for even the most seasoned children's leader. Sometimes we have to look for special ways to communicate with parents about their children.

How to Make Parent-Teacher Conferences Work for Your Child
You've been asked to attend a regularly scheduled "report card" conference with your child's teacher. Or you've gotten a special note from your child's teacher asking to see you. In either case, you might be a little nervous. Well, relax. Teachers don't want to put parents on the spot. They just like to meet with parents from time to time to discuss how to help students do their best in school. All children learn in different ways. They have their own individual personalities, and their own listening and work habits. To help their students learn new knowledge and skills, teachers must know as much as they can about each child's likes and dislikes. No one knows more about these things than you, the parents. And no one has more influence over your children than you. That's why teachers need your help to do a first-class job. Working together, you and the teacher can help your child have a successful school year.
Here are Some Things to Keep in Mind
  • Start the conference right: be there on time, and plan not to run over the amount of time that has been set aside, usually about 40 minutes.

PARENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION
If children are experiencing problems at school, it is important for parents and teachers to share the responsibility for creating a working relationship that fosters children's learning and development. Teachers can encourage open communication by letting parents know when they are available and how they may be contacted, inviting parents to participate in classroom activities, and eliciting parents' concerns and interests prior to a scheduled conference. Parents can introduce themselves early in the school year, letting the teacher know when and how they can be reached and asking how they can begin to become involved in classroom and school activities. Open and frequent communication between parents and teachers helps to ensure that the issues raised in parent-teacher conferences do not catch anyone by surprise. Both parents and teachers benefit from being well prepared in advance of the meeting so that the meeting is less emotionally charged and takes place in a trusting atmosphere. Assuring parents of confidentiality also helps maintain trust. It may be helpful for both teachers and parents to keep in mind that for many parents, it is a fundamental part of the parenting role to be their child's strongest advocate (Katz, 1995).

For many of us, those parent-teacher conferences are filled with anxiety: They evoke insecurities about our effectiveness as parents and they make us feel like kids again ourselves. There are tools to make these conferences productive and useful for you, your child and the teacher whether it's a traditional annual meeting or one of those gut-wrenching special summons. Surviving Parent Teacher Conferences
Oh, that favorite time of year .... conference time. They flow on a continuum from a public affirmation of achievement to a humiliating rake over the coals. Indeed, they can be the "good, the bad and the ugly". What can you do to help ensure that your parent-teacher conference is a positive meeting, benefiting all participants? (Remember, positive does not mean that some bad news will not be shared.) Some helpful hints from Solve Your Child's School Related Problems edited by Michael Martin and Cynthia Waltman-Greenwood follow.
Plan Your Conference Ahead
Be prepared. Review (and write lists) of what you want to know and what you want to say. Here are some questions you might consider asking:
  • Is my child performing at grade level? ...especially in the core subject areas of math? reading? and writing?
  • Has my child taken any achievement, intelligence or aptitude tests in the past year? If yes, what do the scores mean?

Teacher Tips
Suggestions for Successful Parent Conferences Students learn best when parents are involved in their children's schools. When parents and teachers work together, students achieve higher test scores and grades, demonstrate positive behavior and attitudes - resulting in improved long-term academic achievement. At the beginning of the school year, take the opportunity to make personal contact with parents. This can be accomplished through a letter of introduction, telephone conversation or newsletter. The parent-teacher conference is an opportunity to involve parents in the education of their children. The key to a successful conference lies in good communication and careful planning. Parent Teacher Conferences
During Parent Conference Week schools try to facilitate parent involvement in student learning. We do this because we believe students whose families are involved with learning do better in school. A 1994 compilation of research called "The Family is Critical to Student Achievement" "(the) evidence is now beyond dispute. The most accurate predictor of a student's achievement in school is not income or social status, but the extent to which that student's family is able to:
  • Create a home environment that encourages learning
  • Express high (but not unrealistic) expectations for their children's achievement and future careers
  • Become involved in their children's education at school and in the community." The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District along with the Fairbanks Education Association and the Fairbanks Council of PTAs is sponsoring the following list of suggested questions for Parent Conference Week. We want to encourage families to become more involved in learning and believe the following questions can promote successful conferences by improving two-way communication.

Survival Guide: What Every New Member Should Know
  • DO always greet parents warmly at the door. Plan and create an inviting environment. Accompany parents to a place where you can sit together and converse comfortably. Some teachers opt to group chairs in a semi-circle near a table or other surface where they can share student work. (And make sure the chairs are big enough!) DON'T summon parents into the classroom and direct them to sit in front of your desk. Parents may be anxious or fearful about meeting with you, a key authority figure in their child's life. If you distance yourself, put them in a subservient position, or appear to condescend, you're undercutting the chances of a successful meeting.
  • DO start the meeting by showing that you care and know something positive about their child. Summarize the student's strengths before raising problems. Of course, if you have a heavy student load, it can be hard to get to know each child well by early fall conferences. Three hints:
