Parent Teacher Conferences (Pt 1): How to make them work for your child
What do parents and teachers dislike most about school? A recent survey revealed that parent/teacher conferences are big stress producers. They can also be extremely helpful and important to your child. So let's take a crack at cutting back on the stress and pumping up the positives.
A parent/teacher conference can help answer your questions: Is my child getting along well with his or her peers and teachers? Is he or she struggling with math? And what exactly are grades supposed to measure? A parent/teacher conference gives you the opportunity to meet and get to know your child's teachers, ask those questions, exchange information about your child and discuss how you can work together to improve your child's progress at school.
Like anything else, the more effort you put into such a meeting, the more you'll get out of it. A little pre-planning can make all the difference.
Before the conference, talk with your child and find out his or her opinion on how school is going. Compare your child's views with the teacher's evaluation during your meeting. Any misperceptions your child has could lead to unpleasant surprises when report cards arrive.

Parent Teacher Conferences (Pt 2): A Little Homework Makes A Big Difference
Preparing a list of questions for your parent/teacher conference
So you're about to meet your child's teacher at this school year's first parent/teacher conference. You've reviewed your child's school records, report cards, progress reports and any papers brought home from school. You've talked with your child and found out which subjects he or she likes and which subjects are disliked. You've asked your child to talk to you about any problems that exist in school. And now you're wondering how the meeting will go and you're preparing a written list of questions to take to the conference. Three important areas to inquire about are your child's academic, work and social skills. Here are a few questions you might consider asking:
  • Is my child performing at grade level?
  • Does my child have strengths and/or weaknesses in major subject areas?
  • Does my child need special help in any academic subject? In social adjustment? If so, what help is available?

Making Parent-Teacher Conferences Work for Your Child
It's conference time!
Parents and teachers like to meet from time to time to discuss how to help students do their best in school. Children develop in different ways. They have their own individual personalities, and their own listening and work habits.
You are important
To help their students learn, teachers must know as much as they can about each child. No one knows more about your child than you, the parent. And no one has more influence over your child than you. This is why teachers need your help to do a first-class job. Working together, you and the teacher can help your child have a successful school year.
Here are some things to keep in mind...
  • Be there on time. Start the conference right: Be there on time, and plan not to run over the short amount of time that has been set aside. Work together. Conferences are successful when both teachers and parents work as partners to help children make progress. Talk to your children.

For more new teacher oriented articles, make sure to check out New Teachers Online Conquering the Jitters The school year is well established and things are running more or less as you expected. Just when everything is settled, it arrives. Yes, folks, it's Parent-Teacher Conference Time! As this time approaches, it is not unusual for a teacher with many years of experience to have "jitters." When parents come in, anything can happen, especially when a child is not progressing academically, or has had discipline problems. The wise teacher plans ahead for conferences and has all materials assembled well in advance. Parent-Teacher conferences usually occur around the time report cards are sent home. Tensions may be high, and tempers may flare when grades do not seem to coincide with what parents expect from their children. Let's not have any illusions. Fewer teachers are actually talking with 'rentsshort for parentsabout the work a child is doing, 'rents may not have a clue about how well (or poorly) their children are doing. Students know what their parents want to see, and may destroy work rather than have parents know how poorly they are doing. Even letters sent by US Mail are not guaranteedthey are easily intercepted and destroyed. Sadly, in these busy times, parents may not take the time to focus on their children's education, so 'rent-teacher conferences are often the first time during an academic year that parents really pay attention to how well their children are doing in school.

Learning Promoting School Success Expert: Sandy Carpenter , teacher and early education specialist What happens at parent/teacher conferences? Preschool to kindergarten Conferences are usually 15- to 20-minute conversations with the teacher and classroom aides about your child's progress and classroom behavior. Most schools schedule two or three conferences a year. The meetings are rarely mandatory, but they can be extraordinarily helpful. Be prepared to hear an honest report of your child's behavior and progress. A good teacher will talk about your child's strengths and weaknesses and suggest ways to meet learning goals. There are usually three parts to these meetings: 1. The teacher will report on your child's academic and social progress in school. Many teachers will have a portfolio of your child's work assembled to share with you. Some schools require that teachers fill out forms describing your child's progress in specific subject areas, such as math and reading, and summarizing his social and emotional adjustment. She will probably have specific anecdotes ready to illustrate her points; if she doesn't, ask her to relate some. Ask her to clarify anything she says that you don't understand, particularly if she uses confusing jargon about curriculum or teaching standards. 2. You'll share your own perspectives on or concerns about your child's progress. Perhaps he's reluctant to go to school in the morning, or maybe you disagree with the books the teacher chooses. It's a good idea to come prepared with a list of questions that cover all aspects of your child's development: what he's learning, how he's socializing with others, and how he's coping with his feelings.

Preschool to kindergarten
by Cristen Pennington What's below: Why preparing ahead of time is so important Steps to take before the conference How to make the most of your conference time What to do after the conference ... 12 great questions to ask the teacher Why preparing ahead of time is so important
A conference with your child's teacher is similar to a visit to the doctor's office. You have a lot that you want to talk about, and a limited amount of time. The better prepared you are going in, the more beneficial the meeting will be for both you and the teacher. Here are some tips for a productive parent/teacher conference, along with a list of good questions for you to ask the teacher. Steps to take before the conference
Schedule your appointment early
If you're one of the first parents to sign up for a conference, you'll be more likely to get a time that works well for you and your partner. If possible, go to the conference together. This lets the teacher know that both of you are involved in your child's education. And you can compare notes on what you heard and talk over how to deal with the information when you get home. Ask your child how things are going at school Several days before the conference ask your child some very specific questions about school. What would he like you to ask the teacher? What does he like best about school? Are there any kids at school that he's having trouble getting along with? If he could change anything about school what would it be?

Home Prescott High School Parent-Teacher Conferences The North Central Association Problem Solving Committee recommended the implementation of parent-teacher conferences beginning in the 1998-99 school year as a partial fulfillment of our school improvement plan to encourage parent involvement. The conferences shall take place in both the fall and spring semesters. The approximate dates for conferences will be the second week following the close of the first quarter and the second week following the close of the third quarter. Report cards will be distributed at Parent-Conference Night. Conference times will be scheduled during the afternoon and/or evening. Teachers will have a dinner break. Parents will be greeted upon entering the school, at which time they will be given their student's report card (pending obligations) and a map to locate teachers' assigned conference areas. Each teacher will have a parent conference sign up sheet outside of his/her designated area. Parents can either sign up for a 10-minute personal conference that night, a personal conference to be arranged in the near future, or a telephone conference. Parents will be notified of conference dates and times through a letter and by wide media coverage. Conference attendance will be documented in order to assess participation and parental involvement improvement. Parents unable to attend are encouraged to make appointments with individual teachers via the telephone.
