General Agriculture
General Information
The general agriculture curriculum offers students a comprehensive program in applied agricultural sciences. The program integrates theoretical teaching in the classroom with hands-on instruction in the laboratory or field. Students are given much individualized attention through small class sizes. Students completing the program receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture with emphasis in general agriculture. The general agriculture program possesses unique locational and competitive advantages over similar programs. The College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management is surrounded by several agribusinesses which offer invaluable teaching resources. In addition, students make extensive use of a 110-acre University farm for laboratory and field work. The weather in Hawaii makes it possible to be agriculturally active all year round. The general agriculture curriculum offers students flexibility in course selection. There are enough elective hours to allow students to plan a course of study that will meet their career goals. Hence, the curriculum is ideally suited for both freshman and transfer students. Graduates from the general agriculture program are employed by private companies and governmental agencies in a wide range of agriculturally related fields. Also, many students start their own enterprises or proceed to graduate school for advanced degrees.

The Teaching Profession
Congratulations on your decision to make teaching excellence a priority. You have a major responsibility as well as an opportunity for a truly rewarding career. Your students (and their parents) have high expectations. Students expect you to be knowledgeable of your subject and able to communicate it effectively. Students will respond to your lead; if you are motivated and enthusiastic, they will be also. Teaching and learning are exciting activities when both teacher and students are highly motivated. You must be willing to commit a lot of time and energy to be an excellent teacher. You must really care about your students and be interested in them as individuals. Most students quickly sense your genuine concern and will work hard to please you and to fulfill their personal goals of self-improvement and enhanced self-esteem. Your rewards will come from seeing a bewildered freshman transformed into a mature, confident senior who has the ability to seek and obtain a responsible position in agriculture. Students and parents will express their appreciation in many ways such as informing you of their achievements, sharing their inner feelings, and seeking your advice about their problems.

Overview
The Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant and Loan Program (DLT) was created to encourage, improve, and make affordable the use of telecommunications, computer networks and related technology for rural communities to improve access to educational and/or medical services. Background Accomplishments Initiatives Applicant Eligibility ... Qualifying Equipment Background The 1990 Farm Bill authorized the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program to provide grants to rural schools and health care providers. The 1996 Farm Bill reauthorized the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program and established a new loan component. The DLT helps rural schools and health care providers invest in telecommunications facilities and equipment to bring educational and medical resources that otherwise might be unavailable to rural areas. Since its inception in 1993, demand for the DLT program has been enormous. Through fiscal year 1999, the DLT program has funded 306 projects in 44 states and two US territories totaling $83 million. For fiscal year (FY) 2000, the DLT program is capitalized with $20 million in grant funds of which $13 million has been allocated to the competitive grant program. In addition to the competitive grant program, the DLT program also has loan and grant combination financing and loan financing available. For FY 2000, $130 million is available in the loan program and $7 million in grants is being paired with $70 million in loans in the combination-financing program.

Sustainable Agriculture at UC Davis
This page is under construction. While it gives some indication of the breadth and depth of sustainable agriculture at UC Davis, it should not be considered comprehensive and may be out of date in some cases. "Sustainable agriculture" has been defined as producing food today in ways that protect our ability to produce food tomorrow. Agricultural practices that cause irreversible damage to the soil or to the natural systems upon which agriculture depends are considered unsustainable. Sustainability is a central concern for many in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences , although we don't always agree on which practices are most sustainable. In many cases, work underway in our research fields and associated laboratories may provide the answers. Sustainability is also a major theme of our teaching and extension programs.

One of every five jobs in private industry is related to agriculture.
The agricultural industry constantly needs capable professionals, which makes the need for agriculture teachers obvious. Through teaching agriscience and agribusiness topics, teachers help students learn, grow and develop. The agricultural industry has evolved from a production-centered industry into a competitive field that demands a blend of scientific, technological and business skills.
  • Only two percent of the jobs in agriculture are in production.
