May 24, 2002, Washington Post Party Like It's 2012 Mayor Anthony Williams is planning a super cool sports party for kids next month.
But if you want to be part of the fun, you have to move fast. The mayor has announced that the first Youth Sports Day will take place on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kids ages 6 to 14 will be able to learn about more than 20 Olympic sports from local Olympic and Paralympic athletes and coaches. The free clinics will be at 19 sports sites in Washington, Maryland and Virginia. There's only one catch: You can't just show up at a clinic. You have to sign up in advance. Kids can attend clinics in just about every imaginable sport. All the biggest, most popular sports are here. You can learn baseball at Camden Yards or soccer at RFK or FedEx fields. Or how about shooting hoops at Cole Field House, the home of the NCAA champion Maryland Terrapins? There also are clinics in the big Olympic sports, such as gymnastics, track and field, and swimming. But what I think is really great is that kids will have a chance to learn about the smaller, lesser-known sports that aren't on TV very often.

Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena, the Danish handbold, and the German Torball. All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden. Professor Carl Schelenz of the Berlin Physical Education School in 1919 combined elements of handbold and Torball and adapted the soccer playing field for a new sport which he called handball (actually translating the Danish into German). Schelenz also borrowed from basketball, which was just becoming popular in Germany, to allow dribbling as a means of advancing the ball.

DESCRIPTION
Join the growing number of people who are discovering the fun and excitement of team handball! With more points scored than soccer and more continuous action than basketball, team handball has been a popular international sport for years, and now its popularity is on the rise in the United States. No wonderthis fast-paced team sport lets players take full advantage of their running, jumping, and throwing abilities. Written by two former U.S. Olympic players and expert coaches, Team Handball: Steps to Success presents 12 easy-to-follow steps to becoming an accomplished player. Each step is an easy transition from the one before. The first steps provide a solid foundation of basic skills and concepts. As players progress, they'll learn how to combine these skills to attack the goal, decide when to pass and when to shoot, and support their teammates when attacking and defending. The final steps show how teammates can organize as a unit in attack and on defense and how good communication contributes to the effectiveness of the team.

60. Blue & White Online - Handball - February 2003
we’re a very handeye culture.” When Silva worked as a sports psychologist forthe US olympic wrestling team in 1986 he had no clue about team handball.
http://www.unc.edu/bw/feb_03/handball.html
by Brett Garamella
Team handball developed in Denmark as off-season training for soccer players in the early 1900s. It has been an Olympic sport since 1972.
Each team consists of six court players and a goalie. The court is slightly longer and wider than a basketball court. The game is like soccer with your hands, and contact is a part of good defense. It is a passing game with a premium on athleticism, court awareness and technique.
Unlike some high-scoring sports, like basketball, in handball the referees do not touch the ball. The players must put the ball immediately down at the spot where a penalty occurred, so play resumes with no delay.
When Silva worked as a sports psychologist for the U.S. Olympic wrestling team in 1986 he had no clue about team handball. However, the president of U.S. Team Handball, Peter Buehning, requested Silva for his services. Initially hesitant because he had no understanding of the sport, Silva finally gave in after numerous phone calls from Buehning and flew out to the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs to work with the U.S. team.
"They dressed me out and threw me out on the court,” Silva said. “They said, ‘The best way for you to understand the sport is to run around with us. You know, you’re not going to stand there in a lab coat or anything.”
