Olympic Sports: Friend or Foe?
The relationship between Olympic sports and collegiate athletics is characterized by both cooperation and conflict. The following is a look at what the future holds in this arena. By David Hill David Hill is an Assistant Editor at Athletic Management. Athletic Management, 14.4, June/July 2002, http://www.momentummedia.com/articles/am/am1404/olympic.htm If you haven't already heard from Bob Djokovich, you probably will.
A basketball player at the U.S. Air Force Academy in the '70s, Djokovich competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in another sport: team handball, the fast-paced indoor game sometimes described as "water polo without the water." Now, he's President of USA Team Handball, the sport's national governing body.
Faced with the daunting task of growing team handballone of the organization's major goals is for five percent of the American public to even know what the sport ishe says he's prepared to offer athletic departments a slew of help. This includes training coaches, transporting them to clinics, assigning referees, scheduling games with other teams, and even providing tape for court lines.
Having failed to contend for a medal through several Olympiads, USA Team Handball is attempting a new approach. It has largely abandoned trying to turn ex-basketball players in their mid-20s into handball players, and instead plans to attract college-age athletes by offering the chance to represent their country on a medals podium. That would not only enlarge the pool of potential national team members, but it could also lead to a much higher profile for the sport.

  • world map
    research materials
BACKGROUND
Some sports originate in one country while others are a combination of several sports stemming from different countries. Olympic sports that can be traced to one country include soccer and hockey (Great Britain), basketball and volleyball (U.S.A.), fencing (Egypt), judo (Japan), and shooting (Switzerland). Olympic handball is a combination of games from three countries: Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Denmark. ACTION 2. Have students research their sport, finding a description of the sport and its country of origin. Students who chose the same sport may work in groups, deciding among themselves how the research should be divided. 3. Hang a world map on the wall. On the map, ask each student or group to label the country in which their sport originated, and describe the sport to their classmates. DEEPER DEPTHS
Have students research an animal that would qualify as an animal Olympian in their chosen sport. Using the Olympic Animal Athlete cards as an example, have them create their own card that can be copied and shared with classmates.

Bronze medal for Yugoslavia: Kokir (white, Yugoslavia) Cairo, Egypt, June 15 - Yugoslavia won bronze medal on 16th Men's World Handball Championship winning Spain with a result 27:24 (12:14). Success over Spanish team was made after great, equal and very exciting match, in which better concentration of Yugoslav team players was fully expressed. During the match, the Spanish team was doing better. Playing an easy and speed match, they were leading. Yugoslav players contributed to that with a series of mistakes. The turnover came up in the finish of the match. Kokir and Nikolic indicated the triumph with their goals, after which Nedeljko Jovanovic, the best player in the world, practically decided who is going to be the winner with his two master-piece goals. Near Jovanovic, goalkeeper Dejan Peric, who maintained the result close to the Spanish with his successful interventions, contributed a lot to the psychic stability of the team.

USOC Teams with SGMA on Olympic Sports Web Page
NORTH PALM BEACH, FL (November 4, 1996) The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's Athletic Footwear Association (AFA) have joined forces to develop a unique Internet site that will serve as a guide to non-traditional sports. The AFA will work in conjunction with the USOC to provide more in-depth information for non-traditional sports in its existing "Sport-by Sport" area including, but not limited to, wrestling, team handball, badminton, fencing, tennis, kayaking, canoeing and cross-country skiing. "Through our participation studies, we've found that a great number of our young people quit sports at the middle school level, because that's when sports become varsity activities rather than fun things to do at recess," commented AFA executive director Gregg Hartley after announcing the program. "We wanted to raise their awareness of other potential sports, and we intend this innovative site will aid in that effort." The site will include a self-administered skills evaluation exercise, said Jim Page, the USOC's deputy executive director for programs. "Once individuals have determined their physical Îskills IQ' they can use that information to search through a database of information on each sport to determine which might be the best for them."

Wednesday, 9 August, 2000, 17:15 GMT 18:15 UK Handball is the sport for goals
USA and Russia battle it out in Atlanta
Handball has many similarities with football in that the key to success lies in precise and quick passing, though using hands rather than feet. The players work together to move the ball up the court, and do so much quicker than their soccer or basketball counterparts. This leads to a terrific amount of shots being taken and the amount of goals scored in a match by a side can often reach the twenties. Like basketball, players rely on feints, body swerves, and huge leaps in the air to pass, control the ball and shoot. Unlike basketball, however, physical contact is allowed and legal body-checks can sometimes see players crashing to the ground without any punishment being meted out by officials.
Action from Switzerland v Croatia at Atlanta in 1996
The seven players all have positions. Firstly, there is a goalkeeper who has the unenviable task of keeping out the hugely powerful shots being thrown at him. Three players play at the back, in the left, middle and right positions. The left and right backs are the game's highest scorers, advancing forward while the centre back sweeps up behind them.

Westridge School's Newspaper Olympian Lisa Eagen Brings Her Expertise to Westridge Home Sports By Lauren Otero ’03 Have you ever dreamed of being in the Olympics? Have you ever wondered what you would feel like if you had the opportunity to compete against the most talented individuals in a sport? Well, this is your opportunity to find out. Westridge welcomes our very own Olympian, Lisa Eagen. She was a member of the United States Olympic team handball team. However, her athletic experience extends far beyond the handball court. She also was an All-American academic in softball at Iowa State University, her alma mater. At Iowa State, she was a walk-on to the softball team and as the co-captain, earned a full scholarship by her senior year. Other notable awards that Lisa Eagen has received include rookie of the year and most improved. Lisa graduated with a degree in psychology.
Some of Lisa Eagen’s hobbies include piano, reading, and as one might expect, sports! Aside from handball, Lisa enjoys playing golf, tennis, racquetball, and frisbee. However, team handball in particular is especially appealing to Lisa because of its diversity, “I love team handball because it combines so many elements of other games, basketball, soccer, hockey, and water polo. It is fast paced, physical, and very team oriented.” Because Lisa loves every aspect of team handball, she was determined to participate in the Olympics. Her dream came true in 1996 when she earned a place on the U.S. team. Ironically, Lisa Eagen dreamed of being an Olympian since the 8th grade when she wrote an essay about her goal of beating Jackie Joyner Kersee for the gold medal. It would only be a short wait before her turn in the Olympic would arrive. She would not be running as Kersee did, but rather playing handball.

USOC grants aid emerging, endangered college sports
Grants awarded by the United States Olympic Committee June 28-29 have given a boost to collegiate wrestling, men's gymnastics and women's rowing programs. The grants are part of an $8 million, four-year USOC program to assist NCAA member conferences and associations with funding for Olympic sports. The money is intended to enhance endangered sports those that have fallen below the minimum sponsorship criteria for NCAA championships and emerging Olympic sports, as well as increase the number of athletes, varsity intercollegiate programs and conference championships in those sports. The USOC executive committee, meeting in Indianapolis, awarded 13 grants totaling $5.4 million in 11 Olympic sports that are considered endangered or emerging at the collegiate level. The grants are a result of an agreement between the USOC and the NCAA to provide financial assistance to Olympic sports facing extinction or an inability to get started in financially pinched college athletics departments. "This is a new standard of cooperation between the NCAA and the USOC," said William Hybl, USOC president. "It's going to make a difference, not only in opportunities but in quality and the ability to earn medals."

Help Pass the Olympic Sports Revitalization Act The gymnastics community is a closely knit web of coaches, judges, gymnasts and parents that always pull together when really needed. That's what needs to happen now, but we're also going to need some help. What we need to do to really get this bill some attention is to get support from all the sports that will be covered in the bill. By passing the the OSR Act the following sports would receive immediate finanical and legal benefits: wrestling, tennis, gymnastics, rifle/shooting, fencing, outdoor track, swimming, skiing, ice hockey, water polo, judo, field hockey, team handball, synchronized swimming, equestrian, badminton and archery. We all need to do our part to involve anyone we know that is involved with these sports. The more help we get the faster the government will be forced to act. I have already emailed my representatives and all of the senators that are in a position to help with the bill, but I have started a petition as well.
