Derek Brown was about to graduate from La Salle University in Philadelphia in May 1993 when he stepped onto the court to play team handball for the first time. He practiced for a week with players who were training at La Salle for this summer's Olympic Games. The coach invited him to join the team, but Brown said no. He had made a prior commitment to work for an insurance firm after graduation. But after three months at his job at home in Southeast Washington, Brown decided to give team handball another try. He quit his job, packed up his bags and moved back to the La Salle campus to train with the team. Today, Brown, who competed in track and basketball at Gonzaga High School, is one of the top scorers on USA team handball and is headed for the Olympics in Atlanta. The team plays its first match against Sweden July 24 at the Georgia Dome. "Once I became an athlete and knew that there was an opportunity that athletes can become Olympians, I knew that was something I wanted to do," Brown said during a recent visit with his parents and two sisters in Southeast. "I never really expressed it too much. It was just an internal thing."

The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast , with shots being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players per side, but has more recently been moved indoors and played with with seven players, which has sped up the game even more.
The object is to score more goals than the other team by throwing a ball (somewhat smaller than a soccer ball) into a D-shaped net. Games consist of two 30-minute halves. Players can only take three steps after catching the ball and can only hold the ball for three seconds before they must either

    A history of Handball
Early History Handball is one of the worlds oldest sports. The sport was in a variety of guises until its present form today. A ball game was described by Home in 'The Odyssey" in the following way: "And Alcinous commanded the courageous Halius to dance alone with Laodamus, since no one ventured to dance with them. They immediately took hold of the beautiful ball which Polybus had skillfully made out of of purple wool. One of them bending right back, hurled the ball high up into the shadowy clouds; then the other leapt high from the ground and deftly caught it before his feet touched the ground again. And after trying to throw the ball upwards, they danced floatingly to and fro on the bountiful earth, frequently moving from one position to another." A relief on a gravestone dated to be 600BC was found at the city wall of Athens, depicting the above event. According to the writings of the Roman doctor, Claudius Galenus (130-200AD), the Romans had a handball game called 'Harpaston". In the Middle Ages, maids of honour and knights were keen ball game players. The rules of the game were to pass the ball, which was often adorned with ribbons and bells, from one place to another. The minnesingers called the Summer ball the first game. This was sung by Walther von der Vogelwide (1170-1230), who called them "Cath Ball Games", forerunner to the present day game of handball.
